Terence Crawford’s victory over Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez attracted a considerable audience on Netflix.
The match, held at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada on September 13, drew an average audience (AMA) for the average 1 minute live + Same Day Viewers, according to Videoamp and Netflix. On Live+1, that number rose to 41.4 million viewers. Only US audiences had a live + 20.3 million viewers on the same day.
The event peaked with 24 million simultaneous streams and reached the number one slot on Netflix in 30 countries, including the US, Mexico, the UK, Australia, Canada and more.
For comparison, Mike Tyson and Jake Paul’s boxing match (Netflix’s first foray into live boxing) attracted AMAs with 108 million viewers, peaking with 65 million simultaneous streams in November 2024. Most recently, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano’s third matchup won an AMA with 6 million viewers in July.
Crawford defeated Alvarez by unanimous decision after the 12th round to win the indisputable super middleweight championship. According to Netflix, 70,482 people participated in the direct line, creating a $47 million gate.
Elsewhere on the main card, Callum Walsh defeated Fernando Vargas Jr., while Mohammed Alakel defeated Travis Kent Crawford. Both fights were unanimous decisions. Christian Mbili also fought Leicester Martinez in a super middleweight battle.
In addition to boxing, Netflix’s live sports ambitions include the NFL Christmas doubleheader and the weekly airing of WWE’s “Monday Night Raw.” The latter program will allow Netflix Global Top 10 to be available every week from January 2025.
