AI is a “division” for workers in the animation industry: Luminate Report

Entertainment and media companies are increasingly exploring generative AI, and the animation industry is tackling divisive questions about how to integrate AI-powered tools into creative processes and production workflows.

This is one of the key conclusions of entertainment data provider Luminate’s new report, “Animation and AI.” Animation is a proven genre for studios and streamers to invest as a way to attract and retain both adult and child audiences on the platform. To WIT, Netflix’s “KPOP Demon Hunters” has recently become the most streamed original film in Netflix history.

According to Luminate’s US Entertainment 365 survey, animated film fans are most likely to become movie fans frequently. This is because the survey showed that 29% of the audience have seen more than three animated films in theaters in the past three months.

Compared to other film genres, the anime has put all other film categories top. Fans of the animation genre have proven to be one of the biggest users of the streaming platform. For example, Netflix accounts for 76% of users who use streamers to view animated content. Animated films and TV series are most prominent on a per Luminate basis for Hulu and Disney+.

While animation has become a point of interest for major studios and streamers, the use of generator AI within the animation industry remains divisive due to different views on its impact. Luminate says proponents of generative AI see it as an innovative technology that can accelerate production and reduce costs, but it sees potential challenges.

Critics and traditional artists view generative AI as a “dirty” technology and raise concerns about its legal, creative and ethical implications. Issues such as data reduction, IP rights, loss of creative control, ethical boundaries, and impact on job security contribute to disparities. Luminate says concept and class artists, VFX artists and game developers are recognized as one of the most influenced roles in the next two years.
