Robbie Williams has clarified that the white substance that fell from his face during the 2026 World Cup final was mints, not cocaine.
The 52-year-old British singer was referring to a viral video of a live interview he gave during Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, in which a white substance appeared to fall from his face onto a microphone. Without missing a beat, Williams picked up the white object from the microphone and continued the interview.
The “Angel” singer took to Instagram on Monday to share a cheeky video in which she explains that the white object is mint.
“I would like to apologize for the object that fell on my microphone yesterday. It was extremely unprofessional,” he said, lying shirtless on his bed.
“People were worried about me, but I’m okay because I still have some,” he continued, before laughing and sticking out his tongue to reveal two mints.
Williams captioned the video: “Feel like I just woke up… Mint 😀 x.”
The pop star’s incident went viral on Sunday, with some in X accusing him of using cocaine. He removed the mint from the microphone, but scratched his head with the same hand, resulting in a mint on his forehead.
One comment reads, “When a glob of coke falls off my face, I always stick it on my forehead too. That way I won’t forget it and can drink it again later.”
“Robbie Williams is playing around with too much powder,” wrote another X user.
The former Take That member has openly struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse in the past. He has visited rehab many times, most recently in 2007 to be treated for prescription drug addiction.
“I went to a very, very dark place,” he recalled in his 2017 book, Reveal. Addiction takes away the ability to care. ”
“That’s why so many people die from addiction.”
The father of four appeared at the World Cup final ahead of the match, singing the FIFA World Cup anthem “Desire” with Nicole Scherzinger and Italian pop star Laura Pausini. The audience included A-list celebrities including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Timothée Charme and Kylie Jenner.
In the end, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 and won the championship.
