Damon’s identity.
Matt Damon was mistaken for Ocean’s Eleven co-star Brad Pitt while attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup Finals this weekend.
“Brad Pitt is among the fans here,” a commentator told viewers Sunday as cameras focused on Damon, 55, and his wife Luciana Barroso in the stands.
The Fox sportscaster quickly corrected him, saying, “Oh, it’s Matt Damon. It’s Matt Damon.”
He blamed the mix-up on “a lot of light on the monitor,” adding, “I apologize to both parties.”
Damon attended the sporting event wearing a navy blue polo shirt, while his partner, 49, wore a jersey and bucket hat for Argentina’s team, which ultimately lost to Spain.
Social media users teased confused commentators via X, with fans quipping that Damon appeared to be “preparing for his next role as Brad Pitt.”
Others call it a “great ego booster” and “the best compliment a man can receive” because there is “the worst man to be misunderstood”.
“It’s been a hell of a weekend for Matt Damon,” one person joked, referring to Damon’s new film The Odyssey. “He’s the No. 1 movie at the box office, he’s playing in the World Cup finals, and he’s just been mistaken for Brad Pitt on TV.”
“Odysseus is being mistaken for Achilles,” one person tweeted, pointing out that Damon played Odysseus in this film and Pitt played Achilles in 2004’s Troy.
Multiple sources pointed out, “Even the Estonian commentator thought it was Brad Pitt.”
Pitt, in particular, attended a World Cup match at SoFi Stadium in California with his girlfriend Ines de Ramon earlier this month.
The pair watched Spain defeat Belgium on July 10th from their suite with Penelope Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem.
Pitt and Damon have yet to publicly respond to Sunday’s gaffe.
The A-list actors have appeared on screen multiple times over the years in the Oceans series, and both had a cameo in 2002’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
