Tamil drama ‘Problematic Family Members’ will make its Australian debut as an opening night film at the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), following its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
Touted as the largest Indian film showcase in the southern hemisphere, IFFM will run from August 13 to 23, with an opening night screening scheduled for August 14 in Melbourne. Director R. Gowtham and lead actor Karsadayan will be in Melbourne for the opening night celebrations and the film’s Australian premiere.
Troubled Family Member is also nominated in the festival’s IFFM Awards Jury Competition for Best Independent Film and Best Director.
The film revolves around Prabha, a troubled young man. His sudden and unexplained death sends ripples through his extended family and community. When his mother, uncle, and cousins gather for a 16-day memorial service, long-buried tensions and complicated family ties come to the surface. This ensemble drama tracks the unpredictable forms of grief and family dynamics, aiming to provide an emotionally candid depiction of the bonds that bind loss and community.
“‘The Troubled Family Member’ is a deeply personal story that examines grief, family, and the complexities that exist in any community,” Gowtham said. “Following its premiere at the Berlinale, it is an honor for this film to open the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne. IFFM has become one of the most important platforms for international Indian films and we are thrilled to be sharing the film with Australian audiences alongside our incredible cast.”
“IFFM has always celebrated the extraordinary diversity of Indian cinema by bringing together stories from every corner of the country and in every language,” added Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange. “‘Problematic Family Members’ is an extraordinary debut novel that is deeply rooted in Tamil culture, yet at the same time very universal in its exploration of grief, relationships, and the human condition.”
The 2026 edition of IFFM will feature a regular screening of films, conversations and cultural programs across the various languages and regional traditions of Indian cinema.
