Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, is trying to put out a social media firestorm of her own.
After sharing an Instagram post on Sunday that many fans took as criticizing Gomez and the pop star’s half-sister Gracie, Teefey responded to one fan and insisted it was all in fun.
“Daughter. Uncool jokes are made by mothers,” her response read. “Please calm down (lol)”
Page Six has reached out to Gomez’s representatives for comment.
Ms Teefey’s reply came directly below a comment accusing the mother-of-two of provoking her fanbase with a “confusing” upload.
“Oh my god, Mandy. If you have a problem with them, you shouldn’t post this on social media. People will take it out of context and keep hating on Selena,” the user claimed. “I don’t know what’s going on, but please talk to your daughter instead of creating drama.”
The controversy began when Teefey, 50, posted a mirror selfie of Gomez, 33, and Gracie, 13, on Instagram’s Merry-Go-Round, with the caption: “My greatest accomplishment is whether you love me or not.”
“They’re the coolest. One day they’ll realize how bad of a person I am and love me back as much as I love them. I’m just a mom,” she wrote. “No one would ever give up on you, even if you threw me in the trash. I told your mom you were wrong, and maybe you were, we’ll see. But no matter what I did, you had my back.”
The slideshow was filled with memes and quotes, and also included another selfie of the “Hands to Myself” singer.
One slide featured a photo of a doll in a trash can and the phrase, “When I have to run a business, I am what I represent.” Another article read, “She has outgrown what was wasted,” in the form of a neon sign.
A third said: “To be clear, I’m a loyal friend who would be willing to take a bullet for you. But I’m probably also the reason we’re getting shot. Balance is key.”
The post drew negative reactions from some fans, with one fan responding: “Pretty weird choice queen to post about this as a parent 💔.”
A viral post on X, which included a screenshot of Ms Teefey’s post and had more than 500,000 views, said: “People have to keep their private lives to themselves and realize that their daughter is too big of a celebrity to throw a tantrum like that.”
Others defended Teefey, saying her words were taken “out of context” and praised her for raising two “wonderful” and “amazing” daughters.
Teefey, who co-founded the mental health organization Wondermind with Gomez in 2022 and runs the company as CEO, celebrated the wedding of the Wizards of Waverly Place alum and Benny Blanco last September.
“What a perfect celebration for the most amazing couple I know! It couldn’t have been a more beautiful and perfect night!” she wrote via Instagram at the time.
“Love to my beautiful daughter @selenagomez and the greatest son-in-law @itsbennyblanco!!!” She added that the ceremony was “a fairy tale come true” and “absolutely perfect!”
Guests at the star-studded ceremony included Taylor Swift, Paris Hilton, Ed Sheeran, Paul Rudd, and Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin.
