A scripted limited series based on the JonBenet Ramsey murder case has moved from Paramount+ to Netflix, Variety has confirmed. Netflix plans to release the series this winter, with the exact premiere date to be announced later. The current title is “The JonBenét Ramsey Murder Case.”
The series, starring Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as JonBenet’s parents, was originally reported to be in production in March 2024 and was officially greenlit for Paramount+ later that year. Production was completed in January 2025.
Following the Paramount-Skydance merger in summer 2025, the new organization reviewed Paramount TV’s plans and made several decisions, including not moving forward with this show. The decision is believed to be based in part on a settlement between CBS and JonBenét’s brother Burke Ramsey after the CBS docuseries The Case of JonBenét Ramsey claimed that Burke murdered her.
Producer 101 Studios then began selling the series, which, like several other seasons of television completed over the past few years, was eventually acquired by Netflix.
This true crime series investigates the murder of 6-year-old JonBenet, who was found murdered in her parents’ basement just hours after she was reported missing. The case received media attention at the time, but continues to garner attention nearly 30 years later, as no one was ever convicted of the crime. Several documentaries and news features have been made about this incident.
In addition to McCarthy and Owen, the cast includes Emily Mitchell as JonBenét Ramsey and Garrett Hedlund as Detective. Steve Thomas as Detective Alison Pill. Linda Arndt, Shea Whigham as Alex Hunter, Owen Teague as Shane Edwards, and Clifton Collins Jr. as Detective. Tom Trujillo, Angus Caldwell as Burke Ramsay, and Jamie Ray Newman as Amelia Hunt.
Rory Cochran, Chris Bauer, Will Patton, Jeremy Bobb, John Billingsley, and Josh Stamberg will appear in recurring roles, with guest appearances from Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma.
Richard LaGravenese, Harrison Query, and Tommy Wallach are the show’s writers and executive producers, with LaGravenese also serving as showrunner. David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yali and David Hutkin will serve as executive producers for 101 Studios. McCarthy will also serve as executive producer, along with Anne Sewicki.
