Disney is developing a television adaptation of the book series “The Last Kids on Earth,” and has ordered a pilot.
That means episodes of the series will be produced before Disney decides whether to move forward with a full season order.
The project will launch on Disney+ and Disney Channel with showrunners Chad Faibash and James Stotelow (The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Gotham Nights). They will serve as screenwriters and executive produce alongside director Kevin Tancharoen (The Book of Boba Fett, Brothers Son, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). EPs include Max Bralier, Hilary Zwick-Turner, Jennifer Twiner McCarron, Matt Hornberg, and more.
“The Last Children of Earth” by Max Bralier is an illustrated novel aimed at middle school readers. It’s the story of a foster kid named Jack Sullivan who brings the sleepy town of Wakefield into the face of the apocalypse. In this end-of-the-world scenario, Jack thrives on junk food and video games while assembling a team of classmates to fight zombies and monsters. These mismatched teens must band together to survive and become unlikely heroes on a mission to save the world.
The first “Last Kids on Earth” book was published in 2015, and new works have been published every year since then. There are sequels such as The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade and The Last Kids on Earth and the Doomsday Race, as well as standalone books in the series such as The Last Kids on Earth: Thrilling Tales From the Tree House and The Last Kids on Earth: Quint and Dirk’s Hero Quest.
The news comes a week after Disney ordered a pilot for a film adaptation of the mermaid movie Aquamarine. Emma Roberts, who starred in the original film, will guest star as Claire Brown in the pilot.
