Angelina Jolie has revealed that she hasn’t dated anyone since breaking up with Brad Pitt nearly 10 years ago.
The “Salt” actress made a rare comment about her love life in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment while promoting her new movie “Couture.” In the film, Jolie plays an American film director who is diagnosed with breast cancer while working at Paris Fashion Week.
Her character, Maxine Walker, is in a romantic relationship with Anton (played by Louis Garrel), a cinematographer. Jolie said that playing Maxine, who has a daughter, made her realize that she could date while still focusing on her children.
“Honestly, I haven’t dated since my divorce 10 years ago,” Jolie said. “So when I’m so focused on my kids and my family, I get this feeling in my head that maybe that aspect of me isn’t at the center of my life.”
“It took her a little while to say that she can love her daughter and be devoted to her daughter and that’s what she needs as a woman and that she can accept this as a woman,” she continued.
Jolie, 51, separated from Pitt, 62, in September 2016 after two years of marriage, and the former lovers went through a tumultuous divorce that took eight years to finalize. The ex-lovers have six children: Maddox, 24; Pax, 22 years old. Zahara, 21 years old. Shiloh, 20 years old. and twins Vivian and Knox, 17 years old.
Jolie told the outlet that now that her daughters are older, she encourages them not to focus solely on motherhood.
“In a way, I think they’re bringing me back to my old self,” Jolie said. “It reminds me of my desire for them to have strength, tolerance, softness, faith, and ferocity. I think they now want me to be more than just ‘mom.'”
Jolie said she is not thinking about getting older and is instead rediscovering herself.
“I feel like I need to live again. Be free again,” she said. “In a way, maybe life broke me a little bit.”
Earlier this month, Jolie told Variety that her “fighting spirit” was back, admitting that she had “lost it for a little while.”
“I’m getting better, mainly because of the encouragement from my children, who are now older,” she says.
“My children are almost all 18 years old, so now they want to see me traveling the world,” she added. “They know me better than anyone and they still like me, which says a lot.”
While the “Maleficent” star was clearly close with her children, they remained estranged from Pitt.
Three of his ex-girlfriend’s children, Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh, have taken legal action to have Pitt removed from their last names, and twins Knox and Vivienne, who are under 18, have symbolically distanced themselves from each other.
However, Pax remains close to the actor’s family, Page Six exclusively reported earlier this month.
“Pax is still connected to his father’s side of the family and continues to spend time with them,” a source told Us, noting that he recently attended a family gathering.
Still, Pax “doesn’t have much of a relationship with Brad,” another source said.
