Top Bollywood star Ajay Devgn will headline the action entertainer ‘Chauhan’, produced by Jio Studios and co-produced with Color Yellow, marking his first collaboration with filmmaker Aanand L. Rai.
The title was announced on Thursday on the birth anniversary of Devgn’s late father, stunt choreographer and action director Veeru Devgn.
In the announcement video, Amitabh Bachchan’s famous song ‘Jumma Chumma De De’ from ‘Hum’ (1991) is used in the background. The preview opens with a tense conversation that tracks a costly military conflict. This sequence outlines the inability of traditional tactical means such as tear gas, pellet guns, and water cannon to deal with localized resistance. The story shifts to a speech in Kashmir and then to the introduction of Devgan’s character, the titular Chauhan.
The film is directed by Neeraj Yadav and produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Rai and Himanshu Sharma under Jio Studios and Colors Yellow Productions, with a theatrical release date set for October 1, 2027.
Devgn, who has appeared in more than 100 films in a career spanning over 30 years, first established himself as an A-list action star with his 1991 debut film Phool Aur Kaante, in which he was seen standing astride two moving motorcycles. The film was directed by her father, Veeru Devgn, who had built a reputation as one of the most sought-after stunt choreographers in Bollywood even before he became a director.
Over the next few decades, Ajay Devgn starred in the action series Singham, the comedy series Golmaal, the thriller Drishyam and its sequel, and won his third Indian National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the period drama Tanhaji (2020). While his recent films like supernatural thriller Shaitaan (2024) and action film Raid 2 (2025) were both box office successes, he returned to comedy with his latest films Son of Sardar 2 and De De Pyaar De 2 (both 2025).
Jio Studios, the content arm of Reliance Industries, has emerged as one of the most active financiers of Indian cinema, with the successful production of Aditya Dhar’s spy action thriller Dhurandaar, starring Ranveer Singh, both of which are the highest-grossing Indian films.
Color Yellow Productions, founded by Mr. Rai, has produced various titles that were both critically and commercially successful, including the ‘Tanu Wednesday Manu’ series and ‘Raanjhanaa’. The screenplay of ‘Chauhaan’ is by Himanshu Sharma, who has collaborated with Rai in much of his filmography.
