The worldwide hit webtoon webcomic “Lumine” is set to take on a new life as an anime series. Webtoon Productions, the US-based studio and IP business of Webtoon Entertainment, has signed a deal with French animation studio OuiDo! Production to develop an animated series version of the hit webcomic that has garnered over 550 million views on the Webtoon platform.
Webtoon Entertainment made headlines last November thanks to a deal with Warner Bros. Animation to co-produce 10 fan-favorite Webtoon webcomic series for worldwide distribution.
Contract with OuiDo! This highlights some of its most popular series and continues to grow its international production of anime and anime-inspired adaptations outside of the WBA arrangement.
One prime example is the fantasy friendship story “Lumine” by author Emma Krogel. This work was serialized as a webtoon from 2017 to 2024, but there was a hiatus. The adaptation will be unveiled at this week’s Annecy Festival Mifa market, which will be held in France from June 23 to 26.
Logline released by Webtoon Productions and OuiDo! On Monday has confirmed that the adaptation will once again be set in a world where werewolves, witches and humans live side by side.
“Lumine is a down-on-his-luck wolfdog with nowhere to turn…until he meets Cody, an antisocial witch. One causes trouble wherever he goes, and the other attracts trouble like a magnet,” the logline continues.
“Unwittingly, Lumine is the first to step into a family full of secrets of their own. Cody is haunted by shadows, and his motives for hiring Lumine are not as simple as they seem. Things are far more dangerous than Lumine ever imagined, and this is just the beginning,” the logline ends.
A key art image shared with Variety features character designs from the beginning of the webcomic, featuring Lumine and Cody, as well as a white-furred werewolf defending two children from an attack by another werewolf. The characters are surrounded by forests, Gothic mansions, and two skyscrapers looming on the horizon.
Screenwriter Brian Q. Miller (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Smallville) will serve as showrunner and co-write the adaptation in collaboration with OuiDo!. Productions CEO Sandrine Nguyen and the Paris-based creative team of OuiDo!
The film adaptation is executive produced by Webtoon Productions President David Madden and Global Head of Animation Sydney Bright, along with OuiDo!’s Nguyen and President Boris Hertzog.
“Lumine is exactly the kind of project we want to champion at OuiDo!: a beloved world, memorable characters, and a story that resonates with true emotions,” said Sandrine Nguyen, CEO of OuiDo!. production.
“We are very excited to partner with Webtoon Productions. Their deep understanding of creator-driven franchises and global fan communities will be invaluable,” she added. “The addition of Brian Q. Miller is another great asset to this adaptation, bringing extraordinary experience in crafting a compelling character’s journey. We look forward to working together to bring Emma Krogel’s extraordinary world to audiences around the world in animation.”
“Webtoons have revolutionized visual storytelling, and we have a tremendous opportunity to adapt these great stories into new animated television and film projects,” said David Madden, president of Webtoon Productions.
“Fans around the world have connected with Lumine thanks to its incredibly endearing characters, emotional friendships, and unique blend of fantasy, humor, and mystery. At its core, it’s a story about belonging and found family wrapped in a visually imaginative world. That’s why it’s especially exciting to be animating it with OuiDo!, who bring the animation entertainment development expertise from Tentpole IP.”
The “Lumine” webcomic has been translated from English to French, Spanish, German, and Chinese (Traditional and Simplified). Four volumes of graphic novels have also been published by Penguin Random House and Webtoon Unscrolled.
The film announcement comes after Webtoon Productions greenlit “Lore Olympus” into an animated series with Prime Video and The Jim Henson Company in January. Further animated remakes of webtoon webcomic hits include “Apocalyptic Horseplay,” adapted by “Workaholics” co-creator Dominic Russo, and “Goth,” in collaboration with Toei Animation and Studio Mir. “Ereseed” with DandeLion Animation Studio.
Founded in 2003 by Mr. Nguyen and Mr. Herzog of Wido. Productions produced “Magicampers” for Disney Junior, “Alvin!!! and the Chipmunks” co-produced with Bagdasarian Productions, and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+” for Disney Junior.
I bought back OuiDo! After forming from Technicolor Animation Productions in 2025, founders Nguyen and Herzog transformed the company into a full media group covering the entire production, distribution and licensing value chain, launching a dedicated teen and adult animation studio with the adaptation of Lumine as the flagship of this effort.
