Olivia Wilde recently said on her Call Her Daddy podcast that Pamela Anderson helped her get her 2022 film Don’t Worry Darling, which has been plagued by rumors of turmoil in the director’s personal and professional life.
“I actually learned this. This sounds so crazy,” Wilde said. “But after I saw the documentary (‘Pamela: A Love Story’), I reached out to her and was like, ‘Oh, I respect you. I just want to say I’m a big fan.'”
Wilde recalled that Anderson was “aware of some of the terrible things I was going through” and told her in the face of public scrutiny, “The most rebellious thing you can do is remain soft. Don’t let it harden you.”
Anderson has been mired in scandals throughout her career, but in a way, she was able to reclaim her story through the release of Netflix’s “Pamela: A Love Story.” This work was released approximately four months after “Don’t Worry Darling” was released in theaters.
“That was very difficult because I wanted to think, ‘Can I just talk to people? Can I go and say, ‘That’s not true! That’s not true!'” Wilde recalls. “And I was like, ‘No, that doesn’t help.’ And that was really hard.”
Wilde said staying silent was especially difficult because she wanted to promote the film on behalf of the cast and crew.
“I thought, ‘This isn’t about me. It’s about this movie that everyone is working so hard to make,'” Wilde explained. “And I felt like I was working on behalf of the hundreds of people who have overcome the coronavirus and accomplished really difficult things.”
“I was frustrated that I couldn’t protect myself, but at the same time I was like, ‘Okay, this isn’t about you. Just release the movie,'” she added. “And the blow I took was very disproportionate.”
