The Toronto Film Festival has revealed that more than 130 buyers from 49 countries have confirmed their participation in the inaugural market, called TIFF: The Market.
Some of the buyers participating in the market, which will be held from September 10 to 16, include Picturehouse, Tanweer, Cineart, Bona Film Group, Metropolitan Film Export, Tobis, Eagle Pictures and A Contracorriente. (See full list below.)
Approximately 200 buyers from distributors and funding bodies around the world were recommended to the market team with the aim of facilitating acquisitions during the seven-day market.
“These confirmations reflect a concerted effort to respond to seller requests for strong emergency attendance from sellers around the world,” said Charles Tremblay, head of TIFF: The Market. “Our efforts also include more practical solutions, such as access to high-quality, convenient meeting space for buyers and sellers to connect, and market screening to showcase completed projects and content in various stages of development.”
Most of the invitees were from the film distribution sector, but buyers of series and “innovative content” were also invited.
The market team said it is focused on improving the experience for buyers who attend each year. This includes lower Buyer Pass prices, improved hotel discounts for authorized buyers, and expanded access to finished films and ready-to-purchase packages.
The market has received C$23 million ($16.4 million) in funding from the Government of Canada and is supported by Telefilm Canada.
