Executive producer James Barker, known for his work on Love Island USA and Queer Eye, passed away last week from an unexpected medical emergency in Fiji, where Love Island USA was being filmed. He was 40 years old.
The news was confirmed to Variety by ITV America and Peacock. Barker will be honored on Tuesday’s episode of “Love Island USA.”
ITV America and Peacock said in a joint statement: “James’ unimaginable loss is felt deeply not only across the production of Love Island USA, but across ITV and Peacock.” “He was a much loved and cherished member of our family. His kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. We extend our deepest sympathies to James’ partner, family, friends and colleagues.”
The statement also noted his contributions to the show, which spanned “both production and post-production, as well as overseeing the series’ signature soundtrack.”
Barker has been working on Love Island USA since 2020, starting as a story producer and serving as executive producer for the past three seasons. We worked on a total of 110 episodes. His television career began in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures, where his credits included “Counting Cars,” “Forged in Fire” and “Pawn Stars.” He went on to work as a story producer on “Queer Eye.”
Season 8 of Love Island USA is currently airing, and episodes are available to stream on Peacock. Mr. Barker also served as executive producer of “Love Island Games” and consulting producer of “Love Island: Beyond the Villa.”
