The ensemble comedy “Adult” will return for Season 2 in August, but FX is letting fans know by debuting a standalone prequel episode on July 31st.

The episode, which introduces the core group of friends and reveals the origin story of Paul Baker (Jack Inanen), had a surprise screening at New York’s Tribeca Festival on Thursday night. The episode, titled “Marathon Day,” was written by series creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, and directed by Jonathan Krisel. It will be available to watch on FXX and Hulu starting July 31st at 10am Pacific Time.

Kronengold and Shaw said they were “very excited about the opportunity to show our fans how this group of friends came to be.” “We love a good origin story and we can’t wait for everyone to see where the radioactive spider bit Paul Baker.”

“Adult” season 2 will premiere on Aug. 27, with all eight episodes available to stream on Hulu. The series follows a group of 20-somethings living in New York as they navigate love, work, friendship, and family. Samir (Malik Elazar), Billy (Lucy Fryer), Paul Baker (Jack Inanen), Issa (Amita Rao), and Anton (Owen Seale) are five friends who stay together in Samir’s childhood home.

Teasing the new episodes, FX writes in a press release: “Over eight episodes, the housemates tackle a series of new real-world questions. What if the 20-year-old who took over your fake ID is and will always be younger than you were? How do I explain to my friends that I really love what I do? Why do I revert to my worst self when I’m with my family? And how do I ask them to change things when they want everything to stay the same?” The friends develop complex multiplayer strategies to avoid hurting other people’s feelings. They keep finding new ways to make mistakes rather than keep learning the same lessons.
