“Jem and the Holograms” are planning to hold a reunion tour.
A live-action revival of the hit 1980s cartoon is in development at Amazon MGM Studios and produced by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Quilter Films banner (Westworld, Fallout). The project, described as an “advanced live-action techno-thriller series,” also comes from Hasbro Entertainment.
Created by Christy Marx, “Jem and the Holograms” first appeared in 1985 and revolves around Jerrika Benton, a record company owner and singer of the rock band “Jem and the Holograms.” The show was filled with music videos and original songs, including the popular theme “Truly Outrageous.” The voice cast included Samantha Newark, Britta Phillips, Patricia Alice Albrecht, Kath Soucy, Marlene Aragon, and more.
Although the animated series ended in 1988, “Jem and the Holograms” remained in the top three most-watched syndicated children’s shows throughout the 1990s. The fandom continues today through album releases, manga series, and a fan-run convention called Gemcon, which is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.
An attempt by Jon M. Chu and Blumhouse Productions to revive the property in a live-action musical drama film in 2015 was unsuccessful. The film, starring Aubrey Peoples as Jerrica/Jem, failed to recoup its $5 million budget and grossed only $2.3 million worldwide.
Quilter Films was founded in 2011 by husband and wife Nolan and Joy. The company has an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which produces the hit apocalyptic drama “Fallout.”
