The box office revenue of “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” exceeded $1 billion. It will be the first film to reach that milestone in 2026. This animated version of the hit video game was produced by Universal and Illumination in collaboration with Nintendo.
“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” cost $110 million to make, which is relatively cheap for an animated film, so it is expected to make a huge profit. The previous film in the series, “Super Mario Bros. Movie”, was a huge success at the box office and ended its theatrical release with approximately $1.4 billion in ticket sales worldwide.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black, who starred in the first film, returning to the cast, while Donald Glover, Glen Powell, and Benny Safdie round out the voice cast. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic have returned to direct the sequel.
Universal’s upcoming films include Steven Spielberg’s conspiracy thriller “Disclosure Day,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and “Minions & Monsters,” also produced by Illumination. The animation studio is one of the film industry’s most consistent hitmakers, releasing Despicable Me, The Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, The Lorax and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Considering the huge profits of both “Super Mario” movies, Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination will likely be eager to bring Mario and Luigi back into action.
“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ranks as the highest-grossing film of the year, followed closely by Lionsgate’s “Michael,” Amazon MGM Studios’ “Project Hail Mary” and Disney’s “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
