Variety has confirmed that Starz has greenlit the Power sequel, Power: Legacy.
The series follows the reunion of Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) and Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.), the son of Tommy’s late friend James “Ghost” St. Patrick. Starz picked up eight episodes for the first season.
Both actors have previously led their own productions in the “Power” universe, with Sikora appearing in “Power Book IV: The Force” for three seasons and Rainey appearing in “Power Book II: Ghosts” for four seasons. The characters went their separate ways at the end of the Mothership series, but reunited in the “Force” finale. In “Legacy”, Tommy returns to New York and works with Tariq.
Executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson said, “The power never diminishes, and this chapter is our biggest yet.” “Fans have been waiting to see Tariq and Tommy together, and now they’re taking over New York City. Bringing Joseph and Michael back together is special. They’ve turned these characters into true icons of the Power universe.”
“Legacy,” with “Power” veteran Gary Lennon as showrunner and executive producer, is based on a pilot script that Lennon co-wrote with Kendra Chapman Davis. “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp also serves as an executive producer on End of Episodes, along with Jackson from G-Unit FIlm and Television. Mark Canton of Canton Entertainment will serve as executive producer, with Davis, Sikora and Chris Selak also serving as executive producers. Rainey is a producer.
“Power: Legacy” is a co-production between Starz and its former parent company Lionsgate Television. This will be a first for the series, as Lionsgate has previously licensed entries in the series to premium cable operators.
“We listened to our fans,” said Kathryn Buzbee, president of original programming at Starz. “Power never dies, it evolves with its audience, and the Power universe has been at the forefront of culture for over a decade. We’re thrilled to reunite Joseph and Michael and deliver a new chapter that blends the series’ iconic tradition with bold, boundary-pushing storytelling.”
“I’m thrilled to be reuniting with Starz to bring the latest chapter of the Power universe to fans, and I’m especially proud to be entrusted with continuing Tommy and Tariq’s story as showrunners on Power: Legacy,” Lennon said. “It’s going to be shocking to see if these two men can share the city, the game, and the intoxicating drug known as power.”
“Legacy” will be the fifth spin-off of “Power” since the original show ended. In addition to “Ghost” and “Force,” there is also a prequel, “Power Book III: Raging Kanan,” which will be released for its fifth and final season on June 12. There’s also an upcoming prequel, Power: Origins, which doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
“Power” shows are a cornerstone of Starz’s programming. The season 3 premiere of “The Force” drew 9 million viewers across multiple platforms, marking 57% in-season growth, according to Starz.
