Quentin Tarantino slams Hollywood but loves Netflix’s ‘The Rip’

Quentin Tarantino is not a fan of most of the movies released in Hollywood these days. Writing in Sight & Sound magazine, the Oscar winner recently revealed that it’s “nearly impossible” to watch a new movie and not choose it “to death”.

“Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast actors, or just plain stupid shit usually ruin the new movies that come out of the tasteless sausage factory that used to be called Hollywood,” the director explained. “These days, the whole concept of what a movie is tends to inspire more disdain in me than tolerance, which is understandable enough, because compared to the last six years of movies, the ’80s seem like the ’30s.”

“Since then, I’ve watched some of my favorite movies: West Side Story (2021), Horizon: An American Saga Parts 1 and 2 (both 2024), and a few others that really hooked me and made me want to watch them on a regular basis. That’s why I love movies more than any other art form. These days, I’d rather read books.” Tarantino added.

But there is one movie that recently caught Tarantino’s attention. It is none other than “The Rip.” The Netflix crime drama, directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, launched on the streamer in January and centers on two law enforcement officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department who uncover corruption related to $20 million in cartel cash. The cast also included Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler.

Tarantino wrote of the film, “A suspenseful new release that captivated me and held me for the entire run.” “The film is an exciting police thriller with an innovative setting, and manages to deliver the goods in a very clever way. The whole package of Carnahan’s direction, a great cast, and the look of the film (courtesy of cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiros) worked for me. But the real driving element of this great collection is Carnahan and Michael McGrell’s sensational screenplay.”

Tarantino is currently working on the play Popinjay Cavalier, which is scheduled to have its world premiere in London’s West End in 2027. The script is described as an “adventure comedy” set in Europe in the 1930s. As for Tarantino’s film career, the director has yet to announce what will be his 10th and final feature as he prepares to retire.

“The Rip” is currently streaming on Netflix.
