Variety has learned that Hulu is developing a series version of Scott Turow’s novel “Suspect.”
The project is from screenwriter and executive producer Marissa Jo Serral. Through White Oak Pictures, Bruce Miller will serve as executive producer along with Priscilla Polianda, with Matt Shakman joining as director and executive producer. MGM will also serve as executive producer, as will Turow. TV number 20 is the studio.
The show’s official logline reads: “Private investigator Pinky searches for evidence to exonerate a female police chief accused of coercing a male police officer in exchange for a promotion.”
Serral previously worked with Miller as director-producer and writer on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” for which Miller served as creator and showrunner. She is the creator of the ABC limited series “Women of the Movement” and Hulu’s “Black Cake,” and also served as showrunner for both shows. She has also written for shows such as Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why,” Fox’s “Shots Fired” and Freeform’s “The Fosters.”
She is repped by CAA, Heroes & Villains Entertainment, and Myman Greenspan.
Director Miller completed The Handmaid’s Tale in 2025 after six seasons. The show was nominated for 77 Emmy Awards during its run and won 15 times. These awards include multiple acting awards, best writing for a drama series (Miller), and best drama series. Most recently, Miller produced a sequel series, The Testes, which began streaming on Hulu, and the show quickly earned a second season renewal. Miller is also known for his work on shows such as “ER,” “Eureka” and “Alphas.”
He is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austin.
Shakman has been nominated for three Emmy Awards, winning once for his work directing the Hulu series “The Great” and twice for his work directing Marvel’s hit series “WandaVision.” He most recently directed the Marvel film Fantastic Four: First Steps and the Apple TV series Monarch. He has also directed episodes of shows such as “Game of Thrones,” “The Boys,” “Succession,” “Billions,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
He is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
