Shia LaBeouf was sentenced to probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to three counts of simple assault in connection with a Mardi Gras brawl in New Orleans.
LaBeouf’s attorney, Sarah Cherbinski, told The Associated Press that LaBeouf will need to attend an alcohol treatment program.
The “Transformers” actor was arrested just after midnight on Feb. 17 after being taken from a bar in the French Quarter. Video of the altercation showed Mr. LaBeouf pushing a person to the ground and punching him in the face. A New Orleans police report said the punch to the victim “possibly dislocated his nose.”
Judge Juana Marin-Lombard sentenced LaBeouf to six months in prison, suspended for two years. He was ordered to leave the bar with the three victims. LaBeouf was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol treatment after he was initially charged.
“Mr. LaBeouf came to court today to demand that he take responsibility for what happened, and that’s what he did,” Chervinsky told The Associated Press. “Now he looks forward to focusing on his family, work, and new creative projects.”
Local entertainer Jeffrey Klein (also known as Jeffrey Damnitt) said LaBeouf shoved him at a bar that night and yelled homophobic slurs at him.
But LaBeouf’s lawyer said it was a “minor dispute at a Mardi Gras bar” and there was “no evidence of bias or bias.”
The actor was ordered by a court to attend a rehab facility after being arrested in Georgia in 2017 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct while filming The Peanut Butter Falcon. He was later sued by FKA Twigs for sexual assault, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit was settled in July last year.
