The winner has been decided! Lucas Archer’s “Laser-Cat” topped Cannes’ La Cinefe category.

For the 29th time, La Cinéf selected 14 live-action films and 5 animated short films from among 2,750 films submitted from film schools around the world.

The directors are 12 women and 9 men, representing 15 countries on four continents. Two of these schools, Hongik University (South Korea) and ISAMM (Tunisia), will be invited for the first time.

Carla Simon served as jury foreman. She was joined by Park Jimin, Ali Asghari, Salim Kekioushu, and Magnus von Horn.

“Thank you for making us feel different emotions and for allowing us to travel around the world,” Simon said.

“You’ve all made us reflect on today and learned a lot about filmmaking. We wish you all a long and prolific career.”

Second place went to Nadine Myson Jin (Columbia University, USA) for her work “Silent Voices.”

“We have always believed that the personal and the political cannot be separated, and this film is a great example of that,” said Park Jimin.

Third place ex aequo went to Julius Laguthe Larsen’s “Never Enough” (La Femis, France) and Rousebe Geserse and Soraya Shamsi’s “Growing Stone, Flying Paper” (Babelsberg Film School, Germany).

Other selected films include “Sunday’s Children” by Ruben Hamlin (New York University, USA), “Insane Photos of Women with Hair Conditions” by Arwen Aznag (Luca School of Art in Brussels, Belgium), and “Me, You and the Cow” by Aina Callejon (ESCAC, Spain).

In addition to Fanny Kap’s “Pickled” (NFTS, UK), the selection also included “Bird Rhapsody” by Won-Jong Choi (Hongik University, South Korea), “Always Wanting to Be God, Never Wanting to Be Good” by Noah Eppard and Marvin Merkel (Switzerland’s HEAD), and “Over the Threshold” by Tara Gayovic (FDU, Serbia).

“Somewhere I Belong” directed by Youssef Handous (ISAMM, Tunisia), “Axles” directed by Jakub Krzyszpin (Polish National Film School, Lodz, Poland), “Our Secrets” directed by Lenti Liang (USC Cinematic Arts, USA), “Shadows of The Moonless Nights” directed by Mehal Malhotra (FTII, India), and “28 Days” directed by Yasmin Najjar Left” (Aalto University, Finland) was also introduced.

Rounding out the selection are “Left Behind, Still Standing” by Vida Skerk (BFTS, UK), “Where Fireflies Sparkle” by Clara Vieira (ESTC, Portugal), and “Will It Rain Again Today” by Wong Chau-Hong (Nihon University School of Art, Japan).
