In a new interview with Bustle, Mindy Kaling candidly talks about the constant backlash she’s received online for her dramatic weight loss journey, saying that she doesn’t enjoy the scrutiny she receives on social media, but admits that such criticism is somewhat understandable from her pop culture-obsessed perspective.
“Sometimes when your favorite actors lose weight, it becomes less funny. You can imagine what they were like when you got attached to them, and that made you endear them,” she told the magazine. “Obviously, it’s never fun to be criticized, but as someone who consumes pop culture, I really understand that.”
Karin defended her weight loss, explaining that she needed to get in shape to “live at least another 20 years” for her children.
“Do I wake up every day and think, ‘Wow, I’m so gorgeous’? No, of course I feel really healthy,” Kaling said. “When I was younger, I wanted to lose weight to look good. Now I want to lose weight, or have lost weight, to prevent things like diabetes. Diabetes runs in both sides of my family, so I think trying to avoid things like that will lead to a longer life. That’s my goal.”
Kaling told People magazine in 2023 that she doesn’t pay attention to body-shaming comments, explaining: “I know people are really interested in my body and how it’s changed. I think it’s flattering and sometimes it’s just a little thing, so I try not to pay too much attention to it.”
Kaling is currently co-creator and executive producer of the Netflix comedy series Running Point, starring Kate Hudson. The show’s second season debuted on April 23, and the streamer has already renewed the series for season three. Karin’s next series, “Unfit for Work,” will arrive on Hulu in June.
