Al Roker gets in on the beret action.
The meteorologist jokingly trolled John Travolta on “Today” on Wednesday after he made headlines for wearing a different-colored beret at last week’s Cannes Film Festival.
After Willie Geist interviewed Travolta, 72, and his daughter Ella, 26, the show cut to a split between the Grease actor wearing a black beret and Roker, 71, wearing a white beret.
“Al!” Travolta said with a laugh, meeting Roker’s gaze.
When Travolta told the weatherman to “good luck,” Roker quipped, “Hey, monsieur.”
Roker then joked, “It’s directed by an award-winning director. I love it!”
“What motivates me, John?” Roker added as the segment ended.
Travolta and Ella appeared on “Today” to promote his directorial debut, “Propeller Night Bus,” which is based on Travolta’s 1997 children’s novel of the same name.
At the film’s premiere in Cannes last Friday, Travolta rocked a slouchy white beret and glasses, sparking controversy with his choice of headgear.
The next day, Travolta wore a black beret and black wire-rimmed glasses to a photocall for the film, and on Tuesday’s appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” he wore a brown beret and matching jacket.
On “Today,” the Oscar winner spoke about the inspiration behind her viral outfit in France.
“I said, ‘I’m making my directorial debut,'” the 51-year-old told Geist. “If you search for ‘directors and berets’ on the Internet, you’ll find directors in every era for 100 years who have worn berets.”
Travolta added, “I thought, ‘This time I’m not an actor, I’m a director. Come out like a director.'” So I did that and it was really simple. ”
“Saturday Night Fever” said at the Cannes Film Festival that his beret will help him remember his memories at the film festival.
“Oh, you know, it was ‘Propeller Night Bus,’ that was Cannes, that was when I won the Palme d’Or, and I remember it vividly,” he told CNN.
Travolta was awarded the Cannes Honorary Palme d’Or, the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award, at Friday’s event.
He accepted the award in front of Ella, who was by her father’s side promoting a film in which she plays a flight attendant.
Travolta welcomed Ella with his late wife Kelly Preston, who died of breast cancer in 2020 at the age of 57.
