One of the hottest projects at the Cannes market this year is definitely Tomorrow Is a Drug. This is the highly anticipated return of Oscar-winning director Kenneth Lonergan, starring a star-studded ensemble led by Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Ingrid Goes West, The White Lotus) and Academy Award nominee Adam Driver (Star Wars, The Paper Tigers, Marriage Story). Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible, Pieces of a Woman, The Crown) and Matthew Broderick (Manchester by the Sea, The Producers).
Tomorrow is a Drug is Lonergan’s first directorial effort since Manchester by the Sea, for which Casey Affleck won Oscars for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, and was nominated for Best Director.
MK2 Films will handle international sales and WME will handle North America. MK2 Films will submit 11 films to the official selection, including 5 films in competition: Marie Kreutzer’s “Gentle Monster”, Lea Misias’ “Birthday Party”, Andrei Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur”, Ira Sachs’ “The Man I Love”, and Koji Fukada’s “Nagi Note”.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the title hints at the writer-director’s signature blend of humor and moving characters that defined Manchester by the Sea, Margaret and his debut film You Can Count on Me. Sarah Murphy, the Oscar-winning producer of Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, is producing for her Fat City outfit. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in New York.
Driver is in Cannes to perform James Gray’s “Piper Tiger” in competition and previously co-starred with Lonergan in the off-Broadway play “Hold On to Me Darling.” “Tomorrow Is a Drug” reunites Lonergan and Broderick for the first time since the films “Margaret” and “You Can Count of Me,” and the play “The Starry Messenger.”
