‘Vanderpump Rules’ alumnus Allie Luber talks ‘Perfect Match’, James Kennedy

“Do you remember the time you were born?”

Less than 10 minutes into her conversation with Ally Luber, the “Vanderpump Rules” alum wasted no time in assuming the role of interviewer.

Sitting in a Beverly Hills cafe, sipping our respective caffeinated beverages, the purpose of our morning meeting is clearly not to look up my birth chart. But given Lubar’s enthusiasm and expertise in all things celestial (she’s a “spiritual astrologer” by trade and charges a pretty penny ($375 to be exact) for a detailed one-on-one horoscope), I (Virgo Sun, Leo Rising, Pisces Moon) can’t help but ask for her take on things before returning the focus of the conversation. “Oh my god, I get it,” she (Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Libra, Pisces rising) replies. “I’m hooked.”

For Lubar, this interaction is nothing special. Since she was first introduced to the Bravoverse in 2023 as the then-girlfriend of Vanderpump Rules star James Kennedy, a significant part of her public persona has been tied to her passion for astrology. Ruber gained popularity for her stable temperament from the show’s 10th season, essentially the opposite of her chaotic but unfortunately funny DJ. It’s a drama-filled group, especially after she first expressed concerns about Tom Sandoval and Rachel Revis’ intimacy after she spotted them together late one night at a convent in West Hollywood. (We all know how that ended.)

Since then, a lot has changed in Ruber’s life. The couple split after season 11 after Kennedy was arrested for domestic violence in late 2024, causing a stir. Over coffee, she recalled that it was like a test from the universe that “forced” her to do the “hard thing” of walking away. “It’s scary to think that now I’m back in Los Angeles and talking about it from a completely different (perspective),” Luber says. “Right now I feel very removed from that situation.”

Her mindset also likely stems from the fact that she recently turned 30, moved from Los Angeles to Charleston, South Carolina, and last October hopped on a plane to Mexico to film Season 4 of Netflix’s dating series Perfect Match, which brings together singles from various reality series for romance. The first batch of “Perfect Match” episodes are now available, and the show marks Lubar’s first return to unscripted television since 2024, and while she didn’t necessarily envision herself appearing on the show at first, “Perfect Match” provided an opportunity for her to dip her toes back into dating, while also reintroducing herself to viewers as someone other than James Kennedy’s girlfriend. “I’m sure people will see a different side of me on this show: Allie, who’s single and on vacation,” Luber says. “I’m excited to rewrite my own story and story that has nothing to do with him.”

Lubar knows people will be surprised if she returns to reality TV. “I’m already waiting for comments,” she says with a laugh. But, as she explains, the conversation about joining the show took place at a time when her life was mostly in flux. This time last year, she says, she and Kennedy had broken up several months earlier. She would take a walk to the coffee shop, take a bath, watch a movie, and spend some time focusing on herself. “When the public breakup was happening, I wasn’t thinking clearly,” Lubar says. “And, you know, every day gets better.” (Despite the circumstances of their breakup, Lubar still has mostly complimentary words about Kennedy, saying he knows “without him I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I had.”)

Dating had never really been on the cards for Lubar in the immediate aftermath of Kennedy, but the filming schedule for Perfect Match gave her a mental schedule to get ready to tackle things again in a lower-risk environment. “I thought, oh, October, that could be perfect,” she says. And while she was certainly nervous as departure approached, when it came time to leave to start filming, “I thought, ‘This is going to be fun and good for me.'” And it really was,” Lubar says. “I never thought I’d ever have a crush, so it was really fun to be able to go back out there and say to myself, “Yes, I can do this.” As she says, it was also an opportunity for her to “literally learn how to date,” because “I feel like I’ve never actually been on a date.” Instead, “I always jumped into serious relationships,” she says.

Additionally, unlike on “The Bachelor” or “Love is Blind,” castmates who become couples aren’t expected to decide their fates with some kind of promise that determines their futures. “Literally, it’s just fun,” Luber says. “And if you ever meet your match, that’s great.”Reality TV is a unique way to meet someone more than dating apps, but Lubar doesn’t use apps. She admits that she’s not good at checking her phone and thinks it’s because of her Pisces. “This is my dating app,” she says of “Perfect Match.” And since she always seems to have met her past partners in “unconventional ways,” who’s to say her persona isn’t there? Without giving away anything, Ruber said that while in Mexico, she achieved her goal of finding unrequited love. “There were some emotions,” she said with a smile. “I definitely felt something.”

During the filming, Lubar knew she would be moving to Charleston in early 2026, a decision she gradually made after visiting Charleston many times. There was nothing keeping her in Los Angeles. She’s single, her podcast has ended (“Astrology is such a niche thing, and I think we’ve put too much effort into not doing enough,” Lubar says), and her car has been stolen. “Every little thing felt like the universe was literally saying, ‘This isn’t right now. Let’s try something else,'” she says. “I think James was a factor in that. After a breakup like that, it’s good to feel reset sometimes.” Reuver thinks he will return to Los Angeles someday. She remains close with Vanderpump star Shayna Shay, who is also her emergency contact. But for now, Charleston has served her well, and for those familiar with astronomical cartography, Charleston is also astrologically aligned with that star, since it crosses the lunar line. “So I feel like my emotions are more activated,” she explains.

Contrary to what Lubar’s detractors think, this move is not a master plan to sneak into the cast of “Southern Hospitality,” Bravo’s “Southern Charm” spinoff, which revolves around Leva Bonaparte’s Charleston restaurants, specifically Club Republic. “I really wanted to move there,” Luber says. “I’ve had this plan in my head for a while. I go to Hilton Head every summer and Thanksgiving. My family is there, too.” She’s also friends with a lot of the “Southern Hospitality” cast, including Maddie Reese and Joe Bradley, which is why she’s been spotted filming (though she doesn’t have much of a connection to the “Southern Charm” cast). “There are a lot of filming events,” Lubar says. “We’ll shoot in Sur, and my friends will come and maybe be in the back. But that doesn’t mean I’m signing on.”

However, Luber doesn’t blame fans for making assumptions. Charleston has become a Bravo hub, but “it’s so small that it’s impossible for me to get anyone to talk about it or think about it.” But what would have happened if she had moved to join Southern Hospitality? Aspiring reality stars have long been landing roles as Soule on Vanderpump Rules, and many often move between states to further their careers. It’s not like she didn’t think about it at all, Lubar said. The fact that there was potential opportunity there — even beyond reality TV, Charleston is a live music capital, and astrologers also love to sing — was a “little bit” of an influence. However, they were not the deciding factor. “At the end of the day, I studied entertainment. I love this industry. It’s fun. And I don’t think people should feel like they can’t do it because…” she said. “Reality TV is just so funny because you don’t win, you know what I mean? And I guess that’s life. Sometimes you don’t win,” she says with a laugh.

Still, Lubar remains grateful for the TV appearance. “It opened up a lot of doors for me to do astrology and do really great things, so I’m very grateful and happy,” she says. In the least evangelical way possible, she sees it as a platform to “spread astrology and connect with people” – her true passion. So don’t expect to see Louver back on your screens in the future. “Honestly, I’m open to anything that helps spread the message of astrology and love. I know it sounds cheesy, but reality TV is just a platform, and it’s great in that way,” Luber says. “But I’m going to take the wind wherever it takes me.”
