Luxbox has been brought on board to handle global sales for Diego Luna’s Ashes (Ceniza en la boca), which will make its world premiere in the special screening section of the Cannes Film Festival.
The center of the drama is Lucilla. She leaves Mexico with her brother and is reunited in Madrid with her mother, who had left several years earlier in search of a better future. What awaited them when they finally arrived was a reality far harsher than Lucilla had imagined. Still, she is determined to make the most of this fragile new life.
The film stars Anna Diaz and Adriana Paz, who shared the Cannes Best Actress award with Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Carla Sofia Gascón for “Emilia Perez.” The screenplay was written by Avia Castillo, Diego Rabasa, and Luna, and is based on the novel by Brenda Navarro.
Luna said, “This film is the result of a creative journey of independence and great freedom. Having Luxbox join this production team is a dream and we couldn’t be more blessed. It’s a privilege for all of us working on Ashes to be part of their catalogue.”
Fiorella Moretti, CEO of Luxbox, said: “We are thrilled to join Diego Luna and his team on this moving film. What surprised us most is that it offers a rare and intimate perspective on migration within Europe. Lucilla is a shining presence, a character who is both vulnerable and strong. This film, based on Brenda Navarro’s remarkable novel, captures something deeply human and hard to see, and I am confident that it will reach far and wide and connect with people.” To audiences around the world. ”
