Millie Alcock learned five foreign languages

DC’s “Supergirl” made a heroic appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the annual convention for movie theater owners is currently being held.

House of the Dragon actor Millie Alcock will be appearing in Supergirl as Kara Zor-El, aka the Girl of Steel. And in new footage released by DC on Tuesday, Kara Zor-El lives up to her nickname as she battles a group of terrifying pirates who send her into deep space, only to find out they’re messing with the wrong super-powered do-gooder. The entire movie is set on another planet. That means the space shuttle Supergirl was on before it was taken over by thieves has enough crazy alien characters to fill a Star Wars bar. “Can we all just quit smoking hookah,” Supergirl says disdainfully to the alien who won’t stop smoking his pipe on his never-ending journey.

Directed by “I, Tonya” filmmaker Craig Gillespie, the film is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26th. He praised Alcock’s approach to the role, noting that she learned five (comic book) languages to play the role (the footage he shared shows Supergirl communicating with a creature in a series of clicks). The exchange was played for laughs. But Gillespie was particularly impressed by Alcock’s ability to pull off a dramatic scene with his parents while speaking Kryptonian.

Alcock also said that he trained for an hour each day to complete the film’s elaborate stunts before filming began. “It was a lot of fun,” Alcock said excitedly.

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn, who was unable to be in Las Vegas while filming Man of Tomorrow, has teased in the past that Supergirl is “much more hardcore” than previous versions of Superman’s cousin character. The story follows Supergirl as she travels through space with her trusty pup, Krypto the Superdog, to make a name for herself apart from her heroic relatives. After meeting an alien girl named Lucy who is bent on avenging her father’s death, Supergirl joins the fight for justice. Lucy, who holds the sword refusing to surrender it to the pirates, clearly respects our brave heroine.

In addition to Alcock, the cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa as the alien bounty hunter Lobo. Momoa is no stranger to DC, having previously played Aquaman at the studio. He joked that if his two heroic characters met, instead of fighting, he would probably drink “a few hundred beers” and ask Gunn and DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran to star them in a movie together.

“‘Aquaman Robo Movie’ will be coming to a theater near you in 2031,” Safran joked.

“Supergirl” is the second film in Gunn and Safran’s newly rebooted DC Universe, following last year’s hit “Superman,” starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. “Clayface,” a body horror film about a shape-shifting Batman villain, will also be released this fall. It will be released in theaters on October 23rd.
