As Season 3 of The Shrinking approaches its finale, co-creator Bill Lawrence is already looking forward to what’s next. Showrunners have revealed that the upcoming fourth season will mark a creative reset, introducing a fresh narrative while keeping the ensemble cast intact.
Lawrence explained that the series was originally designed around a three-season arc that focused on grief, forgiveness, and moving on. The story has reached its intended conclusion and the creative team is preparing to change direction. He described the upcoming season as “risky” and exciting, stressing that the transition will allow the series to explore new directions for its characters rather than continuing existing emotional storylines.
He expanded on that idea further in a follow-up reply to fans, explaining: “We always proposed a 3-season story about #GriefReduction-Forgiveness-Moving On. We wanted to stay true to that and finish it the way we planned. (Very excited to do Season 4 and the new story with the same cast).”
The comedy-drama, streaming on Apple TV+, stars Jason Segel as Jimmy Laird, a grieving widow therapist who is dealing with a personal loss while trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Harrison Ford co-stars as his mentor, Dr. Paul Rose. The ensemble also includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tenney, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.
Siegel, Ford, Williams, and Urey have all been nominated for Emmy Awards for their contributions to the series, and Siegel and Ford have also been nominated for Golden Globe Awards. “Shrinking” was nominated for the 2025 Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Apple TV+ renewed the series for Season 4 earlier this year, ahead of the Season 3 premiere in January.
The final episode of “Shrinking” Season 3 is scheduled to air on April 8th.
