India’s Geo Studios and Mumbai Film Company have released the first look teaser of ‘Raja Shivaji’, following the theatrical trailer that was released at the same time as ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’.
This historical action drama chronicling the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj received a huge response from audiences in theaters and is now available digitally.
“Raja Shivaji” chronicles the rise of the young Shivaji Bhonsale, who founded the Maratha kingdom during a turbulent period in India’s history and challenged the power of the existing empire to lay the foundations of “swaraja” (self-government).
This work deals extensively with Marathi historical themes and is positioned as a pan-India work. It is directed by Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh and stars in the title role. The teaser showcases the film’s ensemble cast, which brings together talent from the Hindi and Marathi film industries. The line-up includes Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amol Gupte and Genelia Deshmukh.
Music duo Ajay Atul has composed the music and cinematographer Santosh Sivan has handled the visuals. The film focuses on high-octane action sequences and period world-building.
The film will be released worldwide on May 1 in Marathi, Hindi and Telugu. Jio Studios announced the project and Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh will produce it under the banner of Mumbai Film Company.
May 1st is Maharashtra Day, a state holiday commemorating the founding of the state of Maharashtra.
Shivaji’s popularity can be gauged by the fact that the story of him and his companions has been told over 60 times in films and television in India, starting with Sinhagad (1923). Sandeep Singh’s new historical drama, The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, starring Rishabh Shetty as Shivaji, is also in the works and scheduled to release in 2027. ‘Chaava’, starring Vicky Kaushal as the legendary Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Shivaji, was one of India’s biggest hits of 2025.
