Russell Dickerson reflected on his time with Keith Urban at the Country to Country Festival and spoke about his friend’s state of mind following his divorce from Nicole Kidman.
Page Six caught up with singer-songwriter Urban at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday. There, he was nominated for favorite TikTok dance for his viral hit “Happen to Me.” And he was elated about the opportunity to perform with Urban at a music festival earlier this month.
“Every night I thought, ‘I love you so much, you’re my hero,'” he told Us, adding, “I don’t tell anyone else this.”
“I’ve toured with all of them,” he said, referring to the country’s biggest stars. “But Keith Urban is my guy.”
Dickerson recalled that on the final night of the tour, Urban watched the entire set. “I learned his songs when I was learning guitar,” he said. “He was such a huge influence on me learning guitar. It was so cool to see him.”
Dickerson joked that during his performance he would “look over” and say to himself, “Oh, I’m still there!”
Dickerson acknowledged that the pair couldn’t play together, but since Urban was the headliner at the event, he said that by watching his set, “Now (Urban) knows I can rip. And maybe one day I can get up and rip with him.”
Asked by Page Six about the next chapter in Urban’s life after his divorce from Oscar-winning actress Kidman, Dickerson said he thought the Australian country icon was “doing great things.”
Dickerson, 38, said she didn’t get to spend “a lot of time” with Urban, but that she “seemed to be in good spirits.”
“He’s always been focused on the music, so I think he’s doubling down on that. It’s really beautiful,” Dickerson told us. “I can’t wait to hear what comes from it.”
When asked about a possible collaboration with Urban, Dickerson declared on camera that Urban “heard” the question, hinting that the two should indeed collaborate on an upcoming project.
Urban and Kidman, who share two daughters, separated last summer after 19 years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized in January.
And while Urban, 58, seems focused on music, the Oscar-winning actress, also 48, said she is on a positive path.
“I’m always moving in a positive direction,” she said in an interview with Variety published earlier this month. “What I’m grateful for is my family and letting them be and moving on. That’s all.”
