Goodbye, Teddy and Owen! Grey’s Anatomy will be saying goodbye to two veterans (just kidding) when Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd exit the series in the Season 22 finale of ABC’s long-running medical drama, which airs on May 7.
The two former Army majors, who met in Baghdad during the Iraq War and finally (finally!) married on Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy, have been separated and reunited over the years. McKidd joined the show’s cast during season 5, and Raver was also cast in a recurring role the following season. She became a regular late in the 2010 season. At the end of Season 8, Raver voluntarily left the show, but only returned for a guest appearance in Season 14, before making a full-fledged return in Season 15. McKidd and Raver’s exits are said to be a creative decision, and like other stars in the “Grey’s Anatomy” firmament, they could return in the future. Production ended with season 22.
It’s been a rocky road for Owen and Teddy lately — they tried an open marriage that failed and are now officially divorced — but Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes’ statement, read in full below, suggests that perhaps they’ll ride off into the sunset together after all. “It’s both bittersweet and gratifying to be able to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” Rhimes wrote. Eye emoji!
After starring in the 1999 film Trainspotting and HBO’s 2005 historical drama Rome, McKidd went on to star on Grey’s Anatomy and directed 48 episodes of the show starting in 2011 (he also oversaw his exit at the season finale).Raver, who has directed three episodes since Season 19, praised executive producer Debbie Allen in a statement. He is the director of “Grey’s” and has spearheaded the show’s efforts to encourage its acting troupe to direct. “I feel very fortunate to have worked under the talented coach of Debbie Allen, who not only coached me, but welcomed me into the director’s chair,” said Laver.
There are four more episodes in the 18-episode season of Grey’s Anatomy, including this week’s episode.

Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter in my life, both creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything this show has given me over the years. Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing the show both shaped me tremendously. During that time, I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of people. I am especially grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating “Owen” and for the encouragement she gave me as I pursued a career in directing.
Now that that chapter has come to a close, I’m looking forward to what’s next, building new work, telling new stories, and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.
Kim Raver’s statement
Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of taking on this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. Since that day, it has been a true gift to be able to bring Shonda and our talented team of writers’ iconic words to life.
I am especially grateful for the leadership and spirit of our current showrunner, Meg Marinis. I also want to pay tribute to the immense talent of her predecessor as showrunner. That includes mentor Krista Vernoff, who has shaped Teddy’s journey over the years.
I feel very fortunate to have worked under the talented guidance of Debbie Allen. Allen not only mentored me, he welcomed me into the director’s chair. My amazingly talented castmates and my formidable, tireless staff. I was really happy to be able to play with everyone in this arena. I will always hold this company in my heart.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen. It’s two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It’s both bittersweet and fun to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.
Kevin and Kim bring extraordinary talent, nuance, and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions have left an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them and see them shine.
Although we will all miss seeing them every day in the halls of Gray Sloan Memorial, I am excited to witness where Kim and Kevin’s journey takes them in the future.
Meg Marinis statement
Kim and Kevin will always be valued members of the Grey’s Anatomy family.
Over the past 18 seasons, Kevin has brought tremendous depth and heart to Owen Hunt. Owen started out as a stoic military veteran and trauma surgeon, but developed into a loving husband and father, helping to shape the show’s emotional foundation for audiences around the world. In addition to his great acting on screen, Kevin is an incredible leader for the cast and crew on set, having directed nearly 50 episodes.
For 12 seasons, Kim has wowed us with her intense and vivid portrayal of Teddy Altman. Her performance as a strong female veteran and cardiothoracic surgeon was an inspiration to all of us, especially the women in this room who always have to fight for their place. Kim also stepped behind the camera and directed the episodes with the same passion and storytelling instinct that defined her work as an actor.
Their story is coming to an end, but this is by no means a real farewell. We are infinitely grateful for the years, artistry, and memories they have given to the show, and look forward to supporting them in whatever comes next.
