FX replenishes ‘Shogun’ cast with Rio Kukihara, Ryo Sato, Seishiro Nishida, Hantaro Koichi and Takashi Yamaguchi joining season 2 of period drama series
Kukihara plays Gabriel. Sato (“Silence”) plays Rin. Nishida (“Tobu ga Gotoku”) plays Joshin. Saito will be played by Koichi from “Emergency 24 Hours”. Yamaguchi (“Letters from Iwo Jima”, “Pachinko”, “The Accusation”) will play Kano. The previously announced cast includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaido, Ren Meguro, Asami Mizukawa, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneda, Yuko Miyamoto, Yuka Furusato, Tommy Bastow, Jun Kunimura, Yoriko Horaguchi, Eita Okuno, and Takaaki Enoki.
Kukihara, whose casting in “Shogun” marks his first role in a major production, is represented by 42 and CAA. Casting for Season 2 was done by Kei Kawamura and Laura Schiff, who won an Emmy Award in the drama casting category following Season 1.
FX has yet to reveal any specific details about the new characters or the plot of season 2, other than to say that it “takes place more than 10 years after the events of season 1 and follows a story inspired by the history of two men from different worlds (played by Toranaga Yoshii and John Blackthorne, played by Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis) whose destinies are inextricably intertwined.”
“Shogun” is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks created the series and serve as showrunners. Executive producers include Kondo and Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca and Sanada. FX Production is the studio.
