Disney’s animated adventure “Hoppers” jumped to the top spot at the Chinese box office over the weekend of March 20-22, earning RMB 66.3 million ($9.3 million) in its opening slot, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Columbia Pictures’ sci-fi epic “Project Hail Mary” earned $6.9 million and secured second place in its opening weekend.
The racing comedy “Pegasus 3” moved into third place after a long run at the top, adding $5.7 million for a total of $606.6 million. Produced by PMF Pictures and directed by Han Han, the third installment of this high-octane series stars Shen Teng as veteran racer Zhang Qi. The story follows Qi as he leads an underdog national team through the grueling Mucheng 100 Rally.
Martial arts blockbuster “Blaze of the Guardians” followed in fourth place, earning $2.9 million for a total of $195.6 million. Produced by Peace Film Production and directed by Yuen Woo-ping, it is an adaptation of popular comic stars Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse, and Jet Li. The story follows mercenary Dao Ma as he escorts a mysterious fugitive across a dangerous western region to the capital of Chang’an.
Rounding out the top five was Zhang Yimou’s spy thriller “Scare Out,” which added $2.2 million for a total of $186.6 million. Produced by Damai Entertainment, the film stars Jackson Yee and Zhu Yilong as elite national security agents who struggle to stop a spy organization from leaking sensitive aviation technology.
Overall weekend box office revenue in mainland China reached $32.4 million, but year-to-date revenue in 2026 was $1.63 billion, a 52.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
