Anya Taylor-Joy went viral after answering a strange question posed to her during an appearance on the Today show.
The actress was on Wednesday promoting her latest film, “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” in which she reprises her role as Princess Peach.
The animated film is a sequel to 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, in which she co-starred with Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Charlie Day.
Today host Craig Melvin sat down with Taylor-Joy and brought up rumors that she will be playing the iconic singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic. He then started asking her questions, asking her to compare Mitchell to Princess Peach.
“You’re rumored to be playing Joni Mitchell…perhaps one of the most unique and important women in music over the past generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in the history of gaming. What’s the connection there?”
Taylor-Joy, 29, paused for a question and asked, “What’s the relationship between Joni and Princess Peach?”
Melvin confirmed, “Yes.”
The Queen’s Gambit star replied: “They’re both so special, I can’t touch them.”
“They are in a league of their own,” she added.
A clip of the bizarre exchange went viral on X and racked up more than 3 million views.

Some critics criticized Melvin for the strange question, with one comment reading, “It’s not even 9am and he’s asking her how many bulls—t.”

Rolling Stone reported in February that Meryl Streep was set to play an older version of Mitchell in a biopic from Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe.
Taylor-Joy is reportedly in talks to play a younger version of Mitchell, but declined to discuss the rumors further when pressed by Melvin.
