Tori Spelling has reflected on her failed near-romance with Freddie Prinze Jr., revealing her only date was “ruined” by her friends.
Spelling, who briefly co-starred with Prinze Jr. in the 1997 film “House of Yes,” said on Wednesday’s episode of the misSPELLING podcast, “It was supposed to be a very innocent relationship on camera, but off camera, he and I actually built something for each other.”
“We went on a date once, and here we are. I mean, it wasn’t meant to be. My friend ruined it.”
The “Beverly Hills, 90210” actress, 52, recalled that after coming home from college, she was living in an apartment with her “best friend,” who “had all of[her]friends over,” and a group of rowdy young men were smoking marijuana.
“I said, ‘Guys, we have a date. Get serious. He’s going to smell this and he’s going to think it’s me. It’s not me.’ And they were like, ‘It’s going to work out, it’s going to work out,'” Spelling revealed.
“And I thought, ‘It’s too late, you’re all stoned, and I’m sitting on my couch and he’s going to walk right past me.’ ‘Cause I lived in a building where the elevators went up. So he picked me up to go see a movie in Universal City.”
she continued. “Anyway, he came over and my friends were so weird and I was so embarrassed, but I remember one of my friends saying, ‘Freddie, is that Frederic?'” And I was like, “Are you kidding me?” He said, “Can I call you Fred?” I was like, “What’s going on?” ”
The pair then rushed off on a date to see the 1996 film The Cable Guy, starring Jim Carrey.
“That was the end of it, but we remained friends,” Spelling said. However, she pointed out that the two stars had several “making out” sessions in the trailer during lunch breaks during filming. However, it didn’t go beyond “just a kiss.”
“He was so pure,” Spelling said of the now 49-year-old actor.
“I still remember Freddie coming to the set of 90210. I didn’t know him, and it was afterwards, but I was like, ‘Oh, hey.’ And he was like, ‘Oh, hey.’ And he’s like, “Oh,[the makeup artist]knew I was coming.” I’m auditioning for this movie,” Spelling recalled.
It turned out that the movie Prinze Jr. auditioned for and ended up starring in was I Know What You Did Last Summer, in which he met his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The two married in 2002 and have two children. Daughter Charlotte and son Rocky were born in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
Spelling eventually moved on with ex-husband Dean McDermott, whom she married in May 2006. After 17 years of marriage, Spelling announced that the two would be divorcing in June 2023. The divorce was finalized in November 2025.
They have five children: Liam, 18, Stella, 17, Hattie, 14, Finn, 13, and Beau, 8.
