Selena Gomez appeared on the second episode of her husband Benny Blanco’s new podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, with Lil Dicky and Cristin Battalucco. While Star and Blanco discussed their wedding, they also took some time to talk about her longtime friend Taylor Swift and the special gift she gave Gomez for her 30th birthday. The “Murder in the Building” actress also revealed two songs Swift wrote about herself and her excitement over her engagement to Travis Kelce.
Gomez began by reflecting on her love of Swift’s music. “I’m a huge Taylor fan. I’m definitely a lifelong fan,” she said.
Blanco then turned the conversation to Swift’s birthday present. “Can I say that I was completely impressed yesterday?” he began. “Selena is just like bringing things from the warehouse or other houses—”
“Oh, she’s going to love this,” interjected Gomez.
“And she pulled out this piece of art,” Blanco continued. “And I thought, ‘Oh, this is perfect for the living room!'”
“It’s beautiful,” Gomez said of the piece.
At first, Blanco said, she didn’t know it was Swift’s work. “You know, I’m very interested in art. I love art. And I said, ‘Who painted this?’ Like I thought she was going to say Basquiat or something crazy. And Selena says, ‘Taylor made this for my 30th birthday.’ And it’s one of the best paintings I’ve ever seen. ”
Gomez then explained the piece and the thoughtful touches Swift added. “She drew it on actual cloth, and she drew a beautiful lake. And it was night and the moon was among the stars… She drew the exact same constellations as us. So she (Sagittarius) and I (Cancer) had a hand It said, ‘Next 30 Years.’ And it said, ‘From Taylor to Selena,’ and it was all sewn on.”It was hand-drawn, so either I had her paint it or she painted it. ”
Gomez was in awe of the effort, saying, “Instead of writing or printing ‘For the next 30 years,’ she sewed all the letters. It was the sweetest gift.”
The couple then mentioned Swift’s famous sourdough bread.
“The other day she made what looked like fresh sourdough bread. It looked like something made in a professional bakery,” Blanco said.
Gomez added, “I hope she lets us use most of this, but when she made the bread, she said, ‘It’s about the bread.'” get it? “
The star then reflected on how she truly connects with Swift’s music on a deeper level thanks to their shared history. “One million percent (I’m approaching her music in a different way),” she told the group. “Well, ‘Dorothea’ is a song about me, and it’s one of her songs. And I feel like there were a lot of big moments of self-definition, from relationships to family, from love to hate, and everything in between. I was 15 and she was 18. So we didn’t really know what was going on. And we never really saw each other. So when you listen to this, you’re so struck by what this is like.” ”
“So there’s this (unreleased) song that Taylor wrote about it, and it’s called ‘Family,’ and it was briefly over 10 years ago, without quoting, alluding to it in the lyrics. It’s basically saying, ‘You have great dreams, you want to be in the movie, like all the crowds, I’m still looking at you.’ You know, you still believe in my stupid dreams of playing in stadiums. And now when I listen to that song, both of those things happen to me. I cry – that was really cool. ‘Cause at the time she was like, ‘We just wrote this song about us,’ and I love it.”
Looking back at her and Swift’s history, they aren’t as surprised by their fame as you might expect, Gomez told the podcast hosts. “It’s more amazing than that. We survived the best we could, because that’s literally all we talk about,” she said. “It’s not all we talk about, but when we talk about it, we’re not like, ‘Look at this flourish.’ Rather, I feel like I understand this because it’s cool. It’s hard to believe that after so many heartbreaks, love stories, fun stories, and lives, a friendship of 17 years was born, but luckily we both ended up getting engaged around the same time. And that was the coolest part. ”
As the group discussed their admiration for Swift’s fiancé Kelsey, Gomez joined in, saying, “Travis! I think so too (they both ended up with good men),” she said. “I’m very lucky, I’m very lucky.”
