Although Jolie remained openly single for many years, focusing on her family and creative projects, she was rumored to have relationships with several fellow actors early in her career, including two early marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, a high-profile romance with Brad Pitt, and several unconfirmed rumors.

Jolie met British actor Jonny Lee Miller while filming the 1995 thriller Hackers. The two married in 1996 but separated a year later. Jolie filed for divorce in 1999.
In a 1996 interview with The New York Times, Jolie said, “It was weird to get married and immediately lose who you are. All of a sudden you’re somebody’s wife, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m already half of the couple. You’ve lost me.'” When I appeared on a morning show, people threw rice at me and gave me a toaster. I thought, “I have to get myself back.” ”
Despite their breakup, they remain on good terms. “Johnny and I have a really great relationship. He and I have a son the same age and we’re very happy,” Jolie said during a Q&A at the 2025 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, according to People magazine.
Jenny Shimizu
Jolie and model Jenny Shimizu met on the set of the 1996 drama Foxfire. Although the chronology of their relationship is not fully documented, Jolie reflected on how important her feelings were in a 1997 interview with Girlfriend magazine, saying, “If I hadn’t married my husband, I probably would have married Jenny Shimizu. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her.”

Jolie met Billy Bob Thornton on the set of Pushing Tin in 1999. Thornton was reportedly engaged to Laura Dern at the time, but eloped with Jolie in Las Vegas in 2000.
The two were still married when Jolie decided to adopt her first son, Maddox, in 2002. They separated in the same year, and their divorce was finalized in 2003.
Thornton continues to speak warmly of their relationship. In a November 2025 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he said, “We simply broke up because our lifestyles were too different.”
Thornton said he “had a great time together” with Jolie, adding that their relationship was “one of the best times of my life.”
“She and I are still very, very close friends,” the actor revealed.

Jolie and Val Kilmer co-starred in the 2004 historical drama Alexander, sparking speculation at the time of a brief romance. Neither of them commented publicly at the time, but Kilmer later wrote in his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, that he deeply respected her. “I couldn’t wait to kiss Angie, buy her a Gulfstream jet, and have her paint V+J in all its rainbow glory on the tail,” he wrote, according to Us Weekly.

Jolie met Brad Pitt in 2003 while filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston, but by January 2005 he announced his separation from Aniston.
