“Grey’s Anatomy” paid tribute to Eric Dane at the end of Thursday’s episode.
Dane, who played Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on the ABC medical drama for seven seasons, had the honor of showing off some of his most memorable moments in a 60-second montage.
The tribute was soundtracked by Tommy Proffitt and Fleury’s cover of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” which has become synonymous with the show.
The song first appeared in the 2006 Season 2 finale, the same season Dane made a guest appearance.
This montage featured when his character was first introduced to viewers (wearing only a towel) and his character’s growth from serial dating to becoming a proud father.
“Why do you ask for time when there is no guarantee that it will come?” His character is reflected in one scene.
Meanwhile, in another article, he says, “If you love someone, even if you’re scared, it’s not the right thing to do, even if you’re scared that it might consume your life, you say it. You say it out loud.”
The montage ended with his character, who died in a plane crash in Season 7, telling Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Gray, “Don’t waste a second.”
“In loving memory of Eric Dane ❤️,” the show captioned the video on its Instagram page.
Dane made a guest appearance in season 2, then returned as a regular in season 3, but ultimately left the show in season 7.
The “Euphoria” actor passed away on February 19, nearly a year after revealing his battle with ALS. He was 53 years old.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS,” Dane’s family said in a statement to Page Six.
“Eric’s journey with ALS has made him a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle,” the statement continued. “He will be greatly missed and will always be remembered with fondness.”
“Eric loves his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he has received. His family requests privacy as they work through this impossible time.”
Shortly after, Grey’s Anatomy co-stars rallied on social media, with comments pouring in with compliments from Kate Walsh, who played Addison Montgomery, and Chyler Leigh, who played Dane’s girlfriend Lexi Grey.
Patrick Dempsey, who played Dane’s best friend Derek Shepherd on the show, called his death “horrible, harsh and life-changing.”
“I know that before he passed away, a lot of people had contacted him for follow-up inquiries. He was much loved and will be greatly missed,” he said in an interview on Newstalk FM this week.
Dane is survived by his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (14).
