Actress Carrie Coon charmed fans with her role as Bertha Russell in The Gilded Age and many other roles on shows like Fargo and The Leftovers. In addition to her television career, Kuhn also stays busy on stage. There she met her husband, Tracy Letts. He won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play August: Osage County and a Tony Award for his role as George in the revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Here’s the complete relationship timeline of two great figures in the entertainment industry:
Details of the Gilded Age
2012
The two met in 2012 when Steppenwolf Theater Company revived Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? At the Booth Theater.
2013
They married a year later at the hospital where Letts had just undergone emergency gallbladder surgery. During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2017, Coon revealed that they were planning a wedding and had obtained a marriage license in Illinois. The license required it to be used within 60 days of registration, or it had to be re-registered at City Hall. So they decided to give it a go and got married at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Kuhn said with a laugh that Letts was “very crawly” during the ceremony and “her gown was falling off her shoulders a little bit.”
In a 2013 interview with Vanity Fair, Letts revealed more details, saying she was actually on her way to the courthouse to get married when she felt the pain that sent her to the hospital. A Lutheran minister was at the hospital and performed a “lovely, intimate, personal service.”
November 2013
The two attended the Osage County premiere together in August at the TCL Chinese Theater.
September 2017
Kuhn and Letts attended the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater.
January 2018
In January 2018, Kuhn confirmed on “X” that she and Letts were pregnant with their first child.
March 2018
Their son Haskell was born in March of that year. Shortly after, she told Rolling Stone magazine, “I grew up in a family with five kids. I grew up with babies. So babies have never been particularly scary to me.”
March 2021
In a March 2021 interview with The New York Times, the couple spoke about how the pandemic changed the theatrical landscape.
“I haven’t been able to do anything,” Letts said of the quarantine period. “From a creative standpoint, this year has been a sandstorm for me.”
Ms. Kuhn spoke a little bit from her perspective about how having children has changed the way her husband works.
“When I got pregnant with my son four years ago, Tracy really got into it,” she said. “It was as if his biological obligation to take care of his family had kicked in. He just said yes to everything. We were working hard.”
Summer 2021
In the summer of 2021, their second child, a girl, was born.
January 2022
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Coon explained how she hid her pregnancy while filming The Gilded Age in a historic gown.
“I was able to wear the costumes for a few months, but when I came back I had to put strings on the back of every costume,” she said. “The amazing thing about this story is that no one batted an eye. Everyone just jumped on board.”
She added that the costume department “hid it up so well that a lot of people working in post-production didn’t know I was pregnant.” She added: “There were a lot of really fancy capes at the end” and “we were going to celebrate with a very timely carriage passing by.”
Kuhn was eight months pregnant when filming wrapped.
“There were a lot of buttons that moved,” she said. “It’s really magical.”
And she joked that her daughter thought Brian, the dresser on set, was her father.
“Because more than anything, she heard his voice underneath, pulling everything up and putting me back together,” she said. “I like my daughter. She’s a good girl.”
February 2023
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kuhn and Letts sold their Bucktown mansion for $3.1 million. In a May 2022 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Letts said he and Kuhn left the city for the East Coast, sharing, “There’s a great old brownstone a block from Prospect Park that we rented on our commute from Chicago. Now we’re New Yorkers.”
August 2024
In 2024, Carrey received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Gilded Age. That same year, Letts received his first nomination for a guest starring role in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. In an interview with Variety magazine in August of that year, Kuhn said her mother wanted to know if she and Letts had “made history” as a couple, and that both members were candidates.
“She wanted to know if it was big news for the couple to be nominated, and of course it wasn’t,” Kuhn said. “When I looked into it, there were three candidates.”
Two other couples she mentioned were Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor and Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup.

January 2026
Kuhn and Letts had a big night on Broadway for the Jan. 8 opening of the play “Bug.” The play originally premiered in London 20 years ago and was subsequently performed in the United States in 2000 and 2004. Letts revived the play in 2026, starring Kuhn, about a woman who becomes paranoid after spending time with a new man in a motel room.
February 2026
Letts praised his wife’s acting skills in The Bug and shared the unique qualities she brought to the role of Agnes White in the film.
“Carrie (Kuhn) comes out every night in the play and you’ll find kids waiting at the stage entrance doing scenes from ‘Bug’ in acting class or doing it at school right now,” he said in an interview with WBEZ Chicago. “That’s really great. The fact that kids are finding something in this play that speaks to them and that they think is worth repeating.”
“Carrie brings true Midwestern realism,” Letts added. “Carrie is such a physical actor and a physical person. And the physical changes that Agnes goes through over the course of the play have a wild quality that you really need to get the role right. There’s a low center of gravity. And Carrie really has that. She’s just fearless.”
