Netflix has released the first images of its new mystery series, The Boroughs.

Executive produced by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, the eight-part series stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clark Peters and Bill Pullman as a retirement community whose dark secrets are revealed when a grieving newcomer (Molina) joins them.

Molina plays Sam Cooper, who recently lost his wife and is experiencing something of an existential crisis.

The series, created by Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews (The Lord of the Rings: Battle of the Rohirrim), ends on May 21st.

Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt executives will produce Upside Down Pictures.

Ben Taylor will direct multiple episodes. He is also an EP. Augustin Frizzell and Kyle Patrick Alvarez will also direct.

“From the beginning, we wanted The Boroughs to feel equally scary, mystical, exciting and moving. The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once, which is why we had so much fun working with the Duffer Brothers, who are masters at balancing heart and horror,” said Addis and Matthews.

“According to very unofficial calculations, our stars bring 350 years of craft to the borough. We knew they would be great. We didn’t expect them to be so much fun. They can make you laugh and cry just by looking at them. It makes things so much easier for us writers.”

“For years, ever since Cocoon, I’ve wondered why no one has made a movie like Ron Howard’s wonderful Cocoon. Then, out of nowhere, Jeff and Will emailed me an idea for The Boroughs, a story about retirees and monsters,” said the Duffer brothers. They were adamant that unlike many stories about older characters, this one didn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it treats the characters as real people facing real challenges, along with some supernatural issues. It was exactly the show we dreamed of. ”

“The characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things (they ride golf carts instead of bikes), but their spirit is much the same. At its heart, this is a story about belonging and growing up. No matter your age, it’s full of adventure, surprise, comedy, fear, and tears. And most importantly, you’ll fall in love with these characters.”
