The community rallied together following the death of James Van Der Beek.
The actor passed away on February 11th at the age of 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer. Shortly after the news broke, his friends set up a GoFundMe account asking for help for his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children.
On February 12, the account reached $1 million. The goal was initially set at $250,000, but increased throughout the day Wednesday to $1.3 million.
“Following this loss, Kimberly and her children face an uncertain future. James’ medical bills and long battle with cancer have left the family without funds,” the GoFundMe message reads. “They are working hard to stay home, allow their children to continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of their friends, family and wider community will make a huge difference as they navigate the path ahead.”
Funds raised will “help cover essential living expenses, pay bills and support children’s education,” the page continued. “Every donation, regardless of amount, helps Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
Van der Beek had six children with his wife: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabelle, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4.
Last year, the actor began working with a prop store to sell “Dawson’s Creek” memorabilia, including props, set pieces and wardrobe from the WB hit, to help pay for cancer treatment. He received his diagnosis in 2023 and shared the news the following year.
“I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and given life’s recent unexpected twists and turns, it’s clear that now is the time,” he told People magazine at the time. “There is a sense of nostalgia when I part with these items, but I am happy to be able to offer them through the Prop Store auction and share them with those who have supported my work over the years.”
He then began selling Varsity Blues jerseys to help with his medical expenses and to help “family members who are going through the same path.”
