British-French sales company Areef has acquired worldwide rights to Lunar Sway, Canadian writer-director Nick Butler’s second feature film.
The film stars Noah Parker (In Cold Light, Who Fired) and Lisa Weil (How to Get Away With Murder, The Cleaning Lady) and tells the story of Cliff, an unconventional young man on a journey to find connection. When her estranged birth mother, Marg, unexpectedly arrives, the two quickly bond, but her hidden past and vengeful pursuer threaten their new relationship.
The supporting cast includes Caden Connors (“Rivals”), Grace Glowiecki (“Dead Lover”), and Douglas Smith (“Horizon: An American Saga”).
Butler said the film explores outsiders on the fringes of society. “This is a movie about misfits living on the margins, and I want audiences to see themselves reflected in them and see the universal theme of looking for love in the wrong places,” he said. “Aleleaf is the perfect partner to help us reach the audience this film will connect with.”
Alief partner Miguel Govea said the decision to join the project was easy. “At Alief, we want to work with filmmakers telling impactful stories and help bring them to the forefront,” Gobert said. “‘Lunar Sway’ is a story of people struggling to find connection, and nothing brings people together like the collective experience of watching a relatable story unfold on the big screen.”
Brett Walker, President of Aleaf, added, “‘Lunar Sway’ is a fun ride. A story of self-discovery, resilience, and the unexpected paths that lead us to ourselves, anchored by captivating performances from stars Liza Weil and Noah Parker. We are thrilled to represent this film.”
The project is produced by Lucas Meeuse and Jennifer Wrede through Butler’s Cloudy Pictures Inc. Production took place in the Thompson-Nicola region of British Columbia with funding from Telefilm Canada and the Canada Council For The Arts.
Areef will begin selling the film at the European Film Market in Berlin, aiming for its world premiere. Butler’s debut feature The Legacy of Cloudy Falls received theatrical and VOD release from Filmoption International in 2024.
