Animals in War, an anthology starring Sean Penn that tells the true stories of animals affected by the war in Ukraine, has been picked up by Omnibus Entertainment for North American distribution.
This anthology was produced by Ukrainian filmmakers in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Presenting seven separate stories, the film explores the humanitarian and ecological impact of war through the eyes of animals and people. It had its world premiere at Tribeca and was nominated for three Ukrainian Film Critics Awards.
Omnibus Entertainment, a label of New York-based distributor Film Movement, will release the film on VOD, digital outlets and home entertainment.
“This film makes an important statement about how Ukrainians retain their humanity despite all the injustice, violence and destruction caused by this horrific Russian invasion,” said Penn.
Penn added: “These stories are an inspiration to all of us and show how people can endure with compassion and courage in the midst of tragedy and horror.”
Each chapter combines harsh realism with poetic imagery, centering on animals ranging from white rabbits to wolves to cows.
“Animals have no politics, but together with their private breeders they are the targets of a relentless wave of terror,” said creator and producer Oleg Kokan. Director Kokan noted that the film “shows that humanity can be protected even in the face of real evil.”
“Animals at War offers a stunningly original perspective on the human and environmental costs of this invasion, and we are honored to bring it to North American audiences,” said Film Movement President Michael Rosenberg, who announced the deal with producer Oleksiy Makhin and executive producer Adam Siegel at the European Film Market in Berlin.
The company’s recent acquisitions include Harmony Korine’s production company Edglrd’s Barrio Triste. Case 137, a Cannes competition film directed by Dominique Mol, has been nominated for multiple Cesar Awards.
