Jason Momoa will star in “Helldivers,” an action-adventure movie version of the popular video game.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation are backing the film, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 10, 2027.
Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast and Furious series, will direct Helldivers. Although the plot has not been confirmed, this shooter-style video game follows soldiers from an elite unit known as the Helldivers as they battle alien creatures seeking to destroy a fictional planet called Super Earth. Sony has not announced who Momoa or who will star in the film.
This is the latest big-screen collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, following the 2022 video game adaptation Uncharted. The film, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, grossed $407 million worldwide. On the small screen, Sony and PlayStation have collaborated on the Peacock series “Twisted Metal” and the Emmy Award-winning HBO show “The Last of Us.”
Helldivers was released by Arrowhead Game Studios in 2015. The sequel, Helldivers 2, will be released almost a decade later in 2024. That means even more Super Earth material will be mined once the first film score is released in theaters. Producers for the movie Helldivers include Hutch Parker, Asad Kizilbash of PlayStation Productions, and Lin through his company Perfect Storm Entertainment.
Momoa recently directed the video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie with Jack Black, which grossed over $950 million worldwide. The actor, known for his hulking presence, broke out as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones and cemented his stardom with the billion-dollar hit Aquaman. In 2026, she will appear in DC’s comic adventure Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, in Paramount and Legendary’s Street Fighter as the video game adaptation of the barbarian known as Blanka, and in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 3 as master swordsman Duncan Idaho.
