President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One Friday night that the investigation into the kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother is progressing “very well” and that “definitive” answers about what happened could be released in the coming days.
Asked for an update on the case, President Trump said: “I think we’re doing very well in that regard. People were probably surprised to hear that. I think we’re doing very well. I think there are some very strong leads, in a very good way, and I think we’ll get some answers fairly soon.”
He added: “I think the Department of Justice or the FBI or whoever it is will probably come up with something soon.”
When asked if authorities had a suspect, Trump replied vaguely: “It’s possible it’s definitive. A lot has happened in the last few hours.”
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, January 31st, and went missing on Sunday, February 1st. Her daughter, Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, reported Nancy missing after she failed to attend her regular Sunday church service.
Police in Pima County, Arizona, along with the FBI and federal assistance, have been searching for Nancy since her disappearance. Authorities held two press conferences in the days following her disappearance and said they suspected foul play was involved. On Tuesday, February 3, news outlet TMZ, which first reported the news of Nancy’s disappearance, received an apparent ransom note demanding millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The memo set two deadlines: Thursday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 9, which were listed as more serious deadlines.
Savannah and her two siblings posted an emotional video on Wednesday, February 4, pleading with Nancy’s kidnappers to talk to them and show them proof of Nancy’s survival.
“She is 84 years old. Her health and heart are fragile. She lives in constant pain. She has no medicine. She needs medicine to live and she needs medicine to not suffer,” Savannah said in the video. “We too have heard reports in the media about the ransom letter. We are doing everything we can as a family. We are ready to speak. But we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a shadow of a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and are ready to hear it.”
