5 minute readIn June 2024, Normal People star Paul Mescal and musician Gracie Abrams were spotted on what appeared to be a date, sparking rumors that they were dating. By August, the two appeared to “confirm” their relationship by kissing in public.
There may not be much more to say about this, as Mescal said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he plans to keep his love life “private… moving forward” and wants to ” drown out” the gossip.
“Most of the time people are kind and supportive of me,” he says. “That’s my main experience.”
This conversation took place after he broke up with Phoebe Bridgers in 2022 after two years together. Abrams’ last known relationship with songwriter Blake Slatkin also ended in 2022 after about five years of dating.
As of May 2025, Mescal and Abrams’ relationship is on good terms, with Mescal attending the Cannes Film Festival to support his partner. In June 2025, I officially launched Instagram. Here is their full history:
June 2024
A photo of Mescal appearing to be on a date with Abrams was shared by TMZ in June. The images were taken during the day at London’s BRAT restaurant, and witnesses told the publication that the pair had ordered a number of small plates to share.
In the image, they appear to be having an intense conversation. At one point, Mescal reached out and touched her face. He wore a white T-shirt and Abrams wore a pale pink blouse.
July 2024
A month later, The Sun newspaper reported that the pair were spotted shopping together on London’s Bond Street. Mr Abrams was reportedly staying at Chiltern Fire Station and spending a significant amount of time in the city.
August 2024
In mid-August, they were spotted kissing again in Mayfair, London. The Daily Mail reported that they were putting on a “loved display” and strolling through the park, according to onlookers. Mescal covered his face with a hat and sunglasses and was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Abrams wore a white vest and black pants. The two were then seen performing together during musician Mitski’s set at the All Points East Music Festival at Victoria Park.
A source told People magazine on August 18, “They are still dating, but it’s still in the early stages.”
September 2024
Mescal and Abrams were photographed holding hands again on September 2nd in London. The couple each wore black attire, with Mescal wearing a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt and Abrams wearing a black crop top.
October 2024
Mescal supported Abrams’ performance at Radio City Music Hall and attended the Oct. 5 performance. A source told People magazine that the couple is “doing great.”
That same day, Mescal was photographed kissing Abrams on the forehead and putting his arm around her as they walked through New York City. Abrams kissed Mescal’s hand and wrapped his arms around her in several shots.
When Abrams began opening for Swift on her Elas tour in late October, Mescal also joined her performance. He appeared at her performance on October 20th. On October 21, the couple was photographed together in New York City. Abrams wore a dark-colored long-sleeved jacket and pants, while Mescal wore a green T-shirt and olive pants.
November 2024
The actor took Abrams to the premiere of Gladiator II in Los Angeles, but they did not walk the red carpet together. They were spotted at a TikTok afterparty shared by the film’s official account.
Days later, a source told People magazine, “Gracie and Paul are the real deal… They are in the best of hands and are in constant communication.”
December 2024
The two were together in New York in mid-December when Abrams appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” In a clip shared on December 15, the two can be seen holding hands as they step out of a car together.
February 2025
Abrams spoke to Cosmopolitan about her love life. She didn’t talk about mezcal by name, but she did talk about her experience of being in a healthy relationship. “What I love about healthy relationships is that your life doesn’t fundamentally change,” she said. “It’s a perfect fit for us in a way that allows us to work deeply together while still feeling positive challenges. It’s kind of like a landing spot.”
She also talked about how love is “home” to her now. “My current form of love feels like home no matter where I am. If you’ve ever felt insecure in a relationship, if you’ve ever felt safe in that relationship, you know that. Women hear a lot of voices about what love should be and how it should feel. But my experience… So love feels best when you’re asking yourself, ‘What do you want? What’s sexy for you? Where do you feel most at ease?’ There’s nothing better than being with someone when you’re not there.”
In general, she said she would only date people who make her feel safe. “The bar for my relationships is very high,” she told the outlet. “Not feeling comfortable and seen doesn’t appeal to me, so I don’t date people who make me feel that way. I’d rather be single for the rest of my life than feel insecure about a relationship.”
On February 13, the pair were spotted embracing just outside the Noel Coward Theater in London, where Mescal was starring in A Streetcar Named Desire. They then went to dinner in Soho, according to the Daily Mail.
A source told the magazine: “Paul came out the stage door to greet about 100 fans and was signing autographs. Gracie was standing in the street watching, but she was well back in the shadows so no one noticed. She kept a very low profile.”
“Paul then returned to the theater and after the fans left, he reappeared. She was waiting for him and they went around a corner and hid. They kissed and hugged before walking arm in arm to dinner.”
May 2025
Abrams supported Mescal at the Cannes Film Festival’s “History of Sound” premiere and attended a red carpet event. However, the couple chose to remain focused on their mezcal work and did not pose together. However, it worked in black.
June 2025
Abrams played at Glastonbury, but had a special crowd moment with her boyfriend. The singer posted a video of himself singing The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” on Mezcal’s shoulders during Olivia Rodrigo’s set.

July 2025
On July 2, Abrams posted her most intimate shot yet with Mescal on Instagram. The two appear to be cuddling in the selfie. “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” Abrams captioned the carousel of photos.
January 2026
On January 16, Abrams took to his Instagram Stories to praise Mescal’s film Hamnet, posting a tribute to him and the cast.
“I thought it would be almost impossible to find the words to describe the weight of this movie and what has remained in my bones since watching it for the first time. But here we are sitting in the kitchen right now, looking back at these photos, and tears immediately come to my eyes. So I’ll just say that Chloe (Zhao, the director) is singular. Paul is singular. It’s going to be better if you go see it.”
In a second post featuring just a photo of mezcal, she added: “I love his surprises too.”
