Teyana Taylor is setting the record straight with one of the most talked about moments at the Golden Globes earlier this week.
In an interview with Access Hollywood on Tuesday, she admitted the truth behind the viral clip that showed Leonardo DiCaprio having an intense conversation with someone off-camera during an awards ceremony. “He was talking to me! Yes!” Taylor told the outlet. “The crazy thing is, my mind went blank about that day, so I’d like to say I might have been talking about KPop Demon Hunter, because I was so happy when they won, because my kids love KPop Demon Hunter.”
She added that she was dancing to the movie’s hit song “Golden” when DiCaprio noticed her. “I think he caught me jamming, and then we started talking about it. But I don’t remember what he said. I don’t think I even really heard what he was saying. I was probably just laughing and fighting back and had no idea what he was saying.”
“I remember jamming really hard when ‘Golden’ came on…and we had this rant about how much Junie and Lou loved KPop Demon Hunter,” she added of her daughters. “But I didn’t know that moment had been captured.”
The exchange took place on a night that already marked a major career milestone for Taylor. At the ceremony, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Female Actor in a Motion Picture for her performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, in which she co-starred with DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall.
In a moving acceptance speech, Taylor expressed gratitude to his family, supporters and faith. She also addressed the “brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight,” adding, “Our softness is not a flaw. Our depth is not too much. Our light doesn’t need permission to shine.”
The win continues a career-defining breakthrough for Taylor, who was one of ELLE magazine’s Women in Hollywood honorees last fall. In a November interview with ELLE, she reflected on embracing complexity in her work and life, saying that her One Battle After Another character Perfidia “taught me what it felt like to not feel heard, to not feel seen, and how to stand up for yourself no matter who gets in your way.”
