Singaporean director Nelson Yeo has assembled the main cast for The House on the Moon, a genre-blending feature film that combines mythology, science fiction and sagas.
Yeoh’s debut feature Dreaming & Dying made history at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival, now becoming the first Southeast Asian film to win both the Filmmaker’s Golden Leopard Award and Best Feature Film.
Lim Xian leads the ensemble as Zhang Ah, a fairy maiden who lives in the titular moon mansion with her lover Hou Yi, played by Dominic Rustam. The film’s story begins when a legendary sun archer disappears during a mission to rescue a dying sun, and Zhang Ah embarks on a dangerous journey to the dark side of the moon with an earthbound bandit who crash-lands on her world.
Akira Huang plays the role of the thief, and Harry Chan plays Feng Meng. Taiwanese theater artist Lee Kang-sheng, who frequently collaborates with director Tsai Ming-liang, plays Yue Lao, while Doreen To rounds out the cast as Ying Yuan.
“Growing up on the genre-defying 1990s Hong Kong films shaped my view of cinema. ‘House on the Moon’ is my way of continuing that spirit,” said Yeo. “I’m so excited to be working with this cast. They embrace genre-bending freedom and bring both physicality and emotional depth to the story.”
The film is a Singapore-Taiwanese co-production, with Momo Film Co and Aview Images serving as producers. Tan Si En, Wendy Lie and Kuek Shee Heng are the producers of the project.
“As producers, we see ‘A House on the Moon’ as an uncategorizable work that draws from the past while imagining a new future, and we are excited to bring director Nelson’s introspective and ambitious vision to life with a remarkable cast and through fruitful collaborations in Taiwan,” said Momo Film Co.’s Tan.
The film’s proof of concept received support from Singapore Film Board Vice President Grant. Funded by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), Asian partners 9LB Film and KawanKawan Media will participate in production.
“Akira Huang and Harry Cheung are widely regarded as two of Taiwan’s most promising young actors. We are pleased to introduce them to Singaporean directors and producers with the aim of further expanding the presence of Taiwanese talent in the Asian market,” said Mr. Kwek of Abu Images. In addition, internationally acclaimed actor Li Guang-sheng will play a unique and highly anticipated role in this film, which marks another important milestone in his career. As a producer, we look forward to seeing the Taiwanese actor contribute to this creative and challenging project.” I believe it brings a fresh and diverse energy to the production. ”
