It’s been more than 20 years since I read Charlie Hunnam’s review of one of his projects.
The star, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, January 4, told Access Hollywood that he decided early in his career that it was better not to pay attention to the critics.
“I haven’t read a single book. I haven’t read one in years,” said Mr. Hunam, 45, a salesman. “I learned the ropes early in my career. I’ve been doing this for 27 years.”
In fact, there was one project in particular that inspired Hunnam to make a change.
“There was a movie that I was in called ‘Green Street Hooligans’ that ended up becoming kind of a cult favorite, but when that movie came out, the critics weren’t particularly kind to me,” Hunnam admitted. “And I said, ‘Okay, okay. I don’t have to go through this anymore.'”

Green Street Hooligans was released in 2005 and was directed by Lexi Alexander. In addition to Hunnam, the crime drama also starred Elijah Wood, Claire Forlani, and Leo Gregory.
The film focused on an American caught up in the brutal world of English football hooliganism. Although critics panned the film, moviegoers had a different opinion, giving it an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to a 45% rating from critics.
Although Hunnam won’t be reprising his role as Pete Dunham from Green Street Hooligans, he previously revealed that there is one role he would like to play again.
In 2020, during a conversation with Andy Cohen on his Sirius
“I would like to go back to the days of King Arthur. During that time, a lot of things went wrong and a lot of things were out of our control. And I don’t think we’ll end up matching our aspirations,” he explained.
“We didn’t get to make the movie we wanted,” he continued, but he and the critics agreed.
But the Sons of Anarchy star’s decision to eliminate bad reviews means he hears very few good ones, including praise for his role as serial killer Ed Gein, for which he was nominated at Sunday’s Golden Globes.
